BUCKSPORT, Maine — Local police are investigating a robbery Tuesday afternoon at the Rite Aid Pharmacy on U.S. Route 1 in which an undisclosed amount of prescription drugs was taken.

No one had been arrested in connection with robbery as of 9 p.m., Bucksport police Sgt. David Winchester said Tuesday night. He said, however, that police were pursuing several leads.

According to Winchester, the robbery happened about 3 p.m. when a man wearing a camouflage jacket and whose face was covered with what appeared to be a surgical mask entered the store and demanded painkillers, which he received.

Winchester said that police suspect the robber might have had an accomplice who picked him up in vehicle, possibly a white Jeep Cherokee. He said a Maine State Police tracking dog team was brought to the area and was able to pick up a scent but abruptly lost it a short distance away.

Winchester said the robber did not claim to have a weapon and none was shown during the robbery. No one was injured in the incident, he confirmed.

The robbery temporarily closed the pharmacy but it was reopened by 5:30 p.m., a store employee said at that time.

About half of the pharmacy robberies in Maine this year have been at Rite Aids, according to year-to-date data collected at the end of May.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Bucksport police at 469-7951.
