PORTLAND, Maine — A crustacean-eating contest, local beer and an appearance by retiring U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe capped off a daylong celebration of all things lobster on the Maine State Pier Saturday at the fourth annual Portland LobsterFest, put on by the Falmouth Rotary.

Snowe was one of three judges who watched a stage full of contestants eat as many lobsters as they could — both claws and the tail — in 10 minutes. The winner was Ben Floyd, who downed 11 lobsters.

Proceeds from the festival benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program and other Falmouth Rotary charities.

  1. Ok, who’s writing headlines these days? Did the contest include other crustaceans besides lobsters? Or only lobsters? I thought so. Why the heck not just say lobsters, then?
