CARIBOU, Maine — At the request of his attorney, a judge has sealed an affidavit filed by Maine State Police offering details in the investigation of George Jaime Sr., 75, of Presque Isle, who was arrested and charged on Thursday with intentional or knowing murder in the death of a woman who has been missing for nearly 13 years.

The sealing of the affidavit and also of a search warrant in the case will prevent details about the case from being released to the public, at least until Jaime’s harnish bail hearing, scheduled for July 18.

Jaime was charged in connection with the death of Starlette Vining, who last was seen alive in October 1998 in the Presque Isle area and who would have been 38 years old at the time. Vining and Jaime were in a relationship in 1998, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

State police, working with the Presque Isle Police Department, arrested Jaime Sr. about 3:45 p.m Thursday at The Star City Trading Post in Presque Isle.

The trading post, a pawn shop, is located in a large apartment house at the corner of Main and State streets, which police have been searching since Monday.

Vining’s body has not been found.

According to Vining’s missing person profile on the state police website, she last worked at Smythe’s IGA in Presque Isle. That store closed in July 2007. Described as a dependable employee, Vining suddenly stopped going to work in the fall of 1998 and never returned to pick up her last paycheck.

Vining’s former husband and her three now-adult children told police that they last saw her in 1998.

Maine State Police Detective Josh Haines said that family members reported her missing in October 2006. The detective said the family was not close and Vining tended to relocate often. She did not always keep in touch with her family but she never was out of their lives for more than a few years at a time.

Haines had said that recent information led investigators to believe people in the community may have knowledge about the circumstances of Vining’s disappearance.

Jaime was represented at his initial appearance on Friday in Aroostook County Superior Court in Caribou by Alan Harding, a Presque Isle attorney.
Both appeared via video conferencing equipment before Judge David Soucy.

Jaime did not enter a plea.

Harding also filed a motion to preserve evidence in the case. The motion will be addressed on July 18.

Leasajo Hall, who is Vining’s cousin, said Friday that police have asked the family not to discuss the case with the media. But Hall did want to express her love for Vining.

“I love her and miss her, and always will,” she said.

      1. Then we can’t tell the lawyer from the defendant. I say let the lawyer wear his suit. Otherwise, we’d get them mixed up.

    1.  thats funny as heck.. Haven’t laughed so hard in all my life…….  Very true criminal defending another….  Crazy!!!!

  1. LOL … the pawn shop is 200 ft from Hardings office. They must have so much evidence to go after him without a body. His mug shot looks like he is scared to death so they must have him pretty good.

  2. Only in America….can you have an accused murderer defended in court by a convicted tax evading jailbird.  You can’t make this stuff up.

  3. Wow, BDN… my post didn’t contain anything offensive and y’all deleted it.  All I mentioned was a song.  Geez!

    1.  bdn comment police are a joke, erasing things they shouldn’t, leaving offensive stuff they should… i don’t get it either.

      1. he served as a DA decades ago when the state hired attorneys otherwise in private practice to handle a portion of the prosecution caseload. definitely not recently though.

      1. Alan Harding was a prosecutor in the DA’s office in Presque Isle for many years… look it up

  4. First off I agree with everyone here that its rather ironic he has Harding for a lawyer given he doesn’t have the best record legally, and everytime the BGN posts a story about this case they put a map that isn’t accurate. The red mark they have on the KEY BANK PLAZA. The trading post is accross the street. I have noticed that other people have noticed the same thing

      1. If its not the Key Bank plaza then what is it? I know the mark is not in the right place to be the JAIME buidling. I noticed many others on here have noticed the map wrong and commented on it being what they thought was the KEY BANK PLAZA, so I am not alone… Just curious as to what you think it is..

    1. You are correct, if you go left on the map you’ll see Riverside Drive, which is to the west of Jaime’s building. The red dot should be to the left on Main Street. As it is now, it is on KeyBank.

    2. I agree that Harding has a shady history, but to give credit where credit is due, he is one of the best lawyers in the area.

  5. If it looks like a crook and smells like crook, it must be a crook “still”……..Go figure that Harding would be his attorney !!!!! I have to give Harding this, he has balls to do what he did and still go back being an attorney where he will actually be trusted again.

  6. Yesterday on the evening news I thought I spotted Harding standing on the street corner. Guess I was right. He was sharking around for a client. Seems he reeled one in.

  7. I just want to say what an awesome collaboration of Maine State Police , various Investigators, and of course out local law enforcement, Presque Isle PD,  Aroostook County Sheriff’s Dept. as well probably.    Great job everyone.

    1. A criminal charged w/ a crime of such magnitude has a right to such a hearing within five days, in most cases. That gives their attorney time to draft an argument for bail and for the district attorney to argue against it. Please. Accused murderers don’t get out on bail.

    1. i think what thats about is you either didnt read closely or didnt understand any of the previous articles you read about Alan. the licensing board concluded that (1) he definitely did something wrong and (2) he does so many other things right and good that he ought to continue to be able to practice. the vast majority of people who ever have anything to do with him will tell you he is one of the kindest people you would ever meet,

      1. and there are a vast majority of people who have delt with him that would disagree with your statement. I do admit he puts on a good show and yes dispite being a criminal he IS a good lawyer, just might get the perv off if he thinks he can get publicity from it.

  8. ok I looked at their picture again and they both seem to be doomed from their facial expression…

  9. After 13 years it is probably safe to assume that the lead to push this matter forward came from someone who is also in the system and needed to make a deal.

  10. well  I think they both are very smart..attorney client privilege can protect both of them!
probably  both know too much about the other, this way neither can say!

  11. my mother was loved like any other mother out there.  thank all those who stick to the story.  the pd was just looking for info
