BANGOR, Maine — A 57-year-old woman who was seriously injured early Saturday when she was struck by a car and who later died at the hospital has been identified as Brecon Oldham of Bangor.
Oldham was out on a walk near the highway overpass on Union Street about 7:45 a.m. Saturday when she was struck by a car driven by Bangor resident Marie McBrine, 78, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday morning.
“When officers arrived at the scene, there was at least one volunteer firefighter from a local area department who had stopped and assisted,” the sergeant said. “Oldham was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center and later died from injuries sustained from the accident.”
Oldham was attempting to cross an onramp for Interstate 95, Sgt. Ed Potter said Sunday afternoon.
“It was in a crosswalk on Union and [I-95] and the [driver] was making a turn,” Potter said.
McBrine had her 6-year-old granddaughter with her; neither were injured, Edwards said.
Police are still investigating who had the right-of-way — if the driver had the light or if the pedestrian had a signal to walk — when the deadly collision took place, Potter said.
“I’m not anticipating charges at this point,” Lt. Tim Reid, the department’s lead detective, said early Sunday.
The incident is still under investigation, and police are looking for witnesses and others who have information, Edwards said. Those with information about the ongoing investigation can call the Bangor Police Department at 947-7382. The department’s anonymous tip line can be reached by pressing extension 6.

So sad, my thought are with the families.
Sad, my thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time
Terrible thing to happen. RIP
2nd death in Bangor caused by screwed up traffic lights. Just cause you have a walk light doesn’t me someone else has a green light. And the way people are allowed to run the red lights in Bangir, you take your life in your hands whenever you’re on the road. Vehicle or pedestrian.
There is nothing indicating the traffic lights were screwed up. Someone made a mistake. It’s what humans do.
One important piece missing from this story is which way was the pedestrian walking and which way was the driver going.
Pedestrians walk that’s why.
None of the crosswalks on Union Street have been painted this year. Between the southbound off ramp of I95 and Vermont Ave there is not one crosswalk. A good paint job may have avoided this accident or maybe not. I walk that stretch every morning, early, so the lights are only blinking then and I can’t speak to those. I should add that with the 25mph speed limit most cars are going 40!
Even without paint, that is considered an “unmarked crosswalk.”
BDN: The Police knew her name but was withheld pending notification to family members (you publish this yourself) your title makes it sound like after some work, the police associated her with a name when yet they were working on notifying relatives.
“I’m not anticipating charges at this point,” Lt. Tim Reid and why not? they killed a person
Why, because cops can’t just make laws up. They are pre-determined by the legislature. If a pedestrian does something that get themselves killed, should the cops charge them? What if it was a suicide? (Which I don’t think it was) Should be still charge a motorist? Let the cops and lawyers handle who is at fault.
Sounds like an accident to me. Sorry for all parties involved.
“and why not? they killed a person”
-And what should this person be charged with automatically regardless of fault? The police are investigating and if negligence occurred on the part of the driver then charges should ensue. However if no negligence occurred on the part of Mrs. Mcbrine and this was simply an accident are you implying this 78 year old grandmother should be shackled and thrown in the dungeon for circumstances out of her control?
I cringe when I see an elderly driver coming my way…No offense but their reflexes and reaction times are generally awful. So sad that she had her 6 y.o. grand daughter with her. My prayers to the family and friends.
Yea and what about the pedestrian?
I AM THE PEDESTRIAN….hello?
So sad for all those involved. I only hope the 6 year old didn’t see too much of it.

Yup — no copy editors read this story before the “publish” button was pressed…
Once they clicked the publish button they got a pop up window “Did you proofread?” They click Yes, then they get “Are you sure?” they click Yes again, then another pop up “WARNING: You are about to publish an article with several typos in it for public viewing, this could result in many readers doing your job for you. Are you sure you want to do this?” Then they click yes again and our comments begin
Hey! Why was my comment labeled “Guest” and removed?
Because the over obsessed comment police are out. You could post Hi and it will get flagged, then the BDN will keep it removed anyways.
You’re not the only one, just think in a few more weeks the kids will be back in school and maybe the flagging trash will die out
Really? Just because I asked how fast the driver was going and then said that people need to slow down and pay attention? Wicked offensive, eh? LarrySG says the speed limit there is 25. Should have been plenty of reaction time at that speed for both parties to avoid this tragedy. Not like it’s peak traffic conditions on the day and time this thing happened either.
Yes, really. I posted links to a law someone questioned, I made a comment agreeing that BPD should start paying attention to jaywalkers in this city, I made a comment to someone who disagreed and I disagreed and all flagged, removed.
This is the fun of this website, hate a comment, you can flag it so it edventually gets removed all because that person didn’t like what you said. You used no foul language, direct insults, etc but it got removed.
I said it before, the “rules” for commenting is never enforced right. Yet you can flag, a comment for someone insulting you, and you get banned from the site or the comment never gets removed.
The kids seem to run this site more then the adults do.
Somestimes if I am up to it I repost my comments anyways to make a point, BUT, sometimes the typical children don’t listen and the keybopard huggers go back to flagging them comments again because they don’t like the statement you said right, wrong or indifferent.
you know the on ramp to I95 north on union has a crosswalk in front of it that has a pedestrian light that coincides with the green light to go straight OR turn onto the highway in that case, they both may have figured they each had right to turn or walk
I think if I was crossing that on ramp I would go down the ramp a little illegal I know but less dangerous at least you only have to watch one direction wonder more don’t get hit there
i walked from the mall to best buy and i only recall one cross walk and the was up near the light and sidewalk on one side of the street so if your walkin the crosswalk you have to go up to hogan road to cross the street and come back down or did i over look a crosswalk somewhere
You overtlooked 2 exits Lin this was on union no. Hogan
Notice how the person that is in front of you does NOT use their turn signals. I’m glad you know where you are going but I can’t read your mind while driving behind you. You text, you eat and possible sleep while you drive. TURN SIGNALS are put on every vehicle for a reason…. use them. I do just because you never know who or what’s around the corner.
I’m almost positive Marie wasn’t texting.
Breacon, You were one of the most amazing women i have ever met. You cared for not only your residents but your coworkers as well. You had the biggest heart and it was a one in a million. You will be sadly missed, and never forgotten. This was an awful tragedy and i offer my deepest sympathy and prayers to your family, Past and present coworkers, and anyone who has entered into your life.
