ELLSWORTH, Maine — File under “stinkiest ways to close a street.” A bait truck spill on Bridge Hill in Ellsworth made for a slippery, dangerous road Tuesday afternoon.

The unidentified bait truck lost some of its cargo along a steep curve in Bucksport Road between Court Street and the busy intersection with Route 174. By 2 p.m., a cleanup crew was on scene to remove the fish parts and grease from the street.

“There were a lot of fish heads and the oil makes it real slippery,” said Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Campbell, who was on scene to direct traffic. “If someone had come down that hill, I don’t think they would’ve been able to stop too quick.”

Two Ellsworth firefighters pressure-sprayed the street, pushing the debris to the curb and down the drain. Traffic backed up from the Courthouse Fine Art Gallery to Water Street in Ellsworth, and was slowed to one-way traffic headed south from Ellsworth toward Blue Hill on Route 172.

Units from Ellsworth Police Department also assisted at the scene. The city was planning to salt and sand the road, and officials expected the scene to be clear by late afternoon.

      1. He’s just trying to show who’s sane and who’s not.  Or, since some prounce it “sen,” let’s say he’s being insensitive.

    1. I’m pretty sure if Officer Gill Jameson had been on the seine, this would have been taken care of much more ef.fish.iently

  1. Oh, man.  That probably smells worse than the time one of those trucks that they use to empty out portajohns turned over on the Union Street overpass.

  2. looked like the same thing happened in front of Jordan’s Takeout too…it had that fishy stink and sand had been spread…

  3. oh man! don’t park in the garage tonight!! some glad i didn’t have the hot rod out today!

    Herring, herring…herring, herring…herring, herring.

    1. Man, am I slow this morning!  I just got it.  The Kochlear implants I was experimenting with, just for laughs,  must have been on full volume.

  5. The city is going to “salt and sand” the roads?   When I looked, it was 78-degrees this afternoon.  Just wondering what there was to melt.

    1.  Salt will absorb some odor.  That is, if they really are going to do it and that wasn’t just a mistake by the reporter.  But salt does absorb odor.  Try it on your hands next time you cut onions.  Rub hands in salt before you wash.

    2. The salt and sand are just seasonings.  Stand by for the thing they say doesn’t exist:  free lunch.

  6. Worth reading just for the clever puns provided by the readers.  What’s life without a little humor?

  7. What?  Our tax dollars spent to clean up this mess?  Shoulda called the local Asian restaurant owners… next week’s special:  Fish Head Soup.

  8. How “veddy, veddy” sad.  I’m sure this greasy load of fish was enroute to the Blaine House.  Now what will they use to grease palms with?
