STETSON, Maine — Police have released the identities of the two victims killed in a collision between two pickup trucks on Wednesday in Stetson.

Jacqueline Thompson, 43, and her husband, Arnold Thompson, 51, were killed instantly in the crash, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Thursday morning.

Jacqueline Thompson, 43, was driving a green Ford Ranger pickup headed east on East Newport Road when the vehicle failed to stop at stop sign at the intersection with Lakins Road, also known as Route 143, McCausland said. The truck drove into the path of a Chevrolet pickup driven by Jacob Chambers, 29, of Dover-Foxcroft, which broadsided Thompson’s vehicle.

Nicholas Chambers, 27, was a passenger in the Chevy pickup. Both men were transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center with minor injuries. McCausland said Thursday morning that he wasn’t sure if the two were related.

Names of the victims were withheld Wednesday night so police could notify the victims’ families.

Maine State Police Trooper Trevor Snow said at the scene on Wednesday that the crash happened about 5:15 p.m.

Firefighters and emergency medical personnel from Stetson and Etna assisted state police at the accident scene, Snow said. He said Route 143 was closed to accommodate accident reconstruction specialists.

  1. I feel awful about all these accidents – I don’t recall seeing so many fatalities in summers past – so heartbreaking, but thoughts wonder why what seems like a large increase this summer.  So, so many, it seems; so sad.

  2. I knew the family that died and they were great people… People need to step back and realize that the family and friends are greving and the stuff people are saying is not right. No one knows what happened and no one has all the facts. Jackie and Butch were great people and I know I will cherrish the memories I have from them when I was little. RIP Jackie and Butch…..

  3. Losing two members of one family at once has to be hard. Try to keep the insensitive comments to yourself. Condolences to the families.

  4. oh my gosh, i feel so bad for their family. I knew them when i was little, and went to school with their son. They were nice people. Rest in Peace.

  5. God bless the family, accidents are just that.. accidentally doing something without intention …

  6. Butch and Jackie were amazing grandparents and they are looking down on us. LaRae is missing you already.

  7. Very very sad.  I did not know them, but it sounds like they were thought of very highly by those who knew them.  My condolences
