FREEPORT, Maine — A 90-year-old Freeport man died late Sunday after an afternoon accident on Lower Mast Landing Road.

Freeport police responded around 1 p.m. to the crash where officers believe Bow Street resident John Rodrigues veered off the road and collided with a tree.

Police Chief Gerald Schofield said Monday that the cause of the accident is still under investigation, but officers on the scene suspected Rodrigues either had a medical emergency or fell asleep while behind the wheel of a 1999 red Ford pickup truck.

Rodrigues was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland after the accident. Schofield said that his department was notified around 1:30 a.m. Monday that Rodrigues died.
