HAMPDEN, Maine — U.S. Route 1A in Hampden has reopened to regular traffic three days ahead of schedule, a Maine Department of Transportation spokesman announced Friday.

The stretch of road running from Wheeldon Street to R&K Variety was closed Monday so that work crews could replace a culvert located in a deep gully as part of the MDOT’s full reconstruction of the section of Route 1A known locally as Main Road North.

Several detour signs were put up to steer motorists away from the work zone for five days.

“Due to the hard work and coordination of [MDOT] crews and Sitewerx Inc. of Hermon, the culvert replacement project was finished ahead of schedule,” Talbot said.
