PLEASANT RIDGE PLANTATION, Maine — Maine State Police on Thursday were searching Pleasant Ridge Plantation in Somerset County for the second straight day.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland would not provide any clues as to why police were in the area.

“I’m not going to say what case it involves or what we’re looking for,” said McCausland on Thursday afternoon. “It’s the second day in the area searching the heavily wooded area. Half-a-dozen people are there with state police conducting the search.”

McCausland did rule out one case that the search could be about.

“It has nothing to do with Ayla Reynolds,” he said Thursday evening, but provided no other update.

Ayla was 20 months old when she was reported missing from her father’s home in Waterville on Dec. 17, 2011. Police conducted numerous searches but have yet to find the toddler.

How long police will be in the area or whether they will return after Thursday was something McCausland said he didn’t know.

“They will reassess at the end of the day where we go from here,” he said.

  1. Right away we all think Baby Alya please bring her home. but this is  1  1/2 hours away from Waterville.

      1.  ya right , I’d like to see you get from downtown Waterville to there in 45 minutes. it’s 51 miles plus all the lights in Waterville and Scowl-hegan. I’ll buy you a bottle of allen’s if you can do it in 45.

  2. Wow, what a stupid attention grabbing headline.  Searching… Searching for what?  Trying to get the scoop without the scoop.

Oooooh!  Must be super top secret undercover work to keep the media from giving whatever perps the heads up that the police are searching, mmmm- yeah searching.

If anyone did something naughty in Pleasant Ridge Plantation, they’re going to know the cops are coming now.

    1. Relax…they are telling us what they know. If the headline ruins your day that much you better stay off the computer.

  3. I was told, could just be rumor though, that it is about a cold case that involves a man with stage 4 cancer and wants to clear his conscience before he dies and told police that he dumped a body in the woods 35 years ago. I highly doubt it has anything to do with the Ayla Reynolds case.

    1.  The original story was posted at 2:54pm and said nothing about Ayla Reynolds.  The story was edited at 9:21pm to include that information.  The posting and editing times can be found directly below the byline.

It would be helpful if the BDN would somehow highlight the new information in the article so that later readers don’t assume that prior readers didn’t read and/or comprehend.

  4. It appears that the police have a job to do, and they should be able to do it without having to deal with speculation and interference. The people have a right to know, but not everything and not immediately. The information is clearly on a “need to know” basis, and the truth is that we want to know, but we do not necessarily need to know.
