PARIS, Maine — An Industry man pleaded guilty Friday in Oxford County Superior Court to gross sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in Mexico earlier this year.

Christian Richards, 19, will serve one year of a five-year sentence; the remaining four were suspended. He will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Richards also pleaded guilty to an assault charge brought when he was a juvenile, and was sentenced to 30 days, to be served concurrently with the one-year sentence.

According to Assistant District Attorney Joseph M. O’Connor, Richards assaulted the 13-year-old girl Feb. 20 in Mexico. The girl reported it the next day.

O’Connor said Richards admitted to meeting the girl on Facebook, but initially denied assaulting her. He was charged in March.

He was sentenced to four years probation and ordered not to contact the girl or anyone under the age of 16.

  1. 5 years with 4 years suspended for sexually assaulting a 13 year old girl and register as a sex offender for life…with good behavior he’ll be out in 6 months or less-yeah…THAT will teach him.  Way to go justice system- you’re nothing more than a joke and a bad one at that.

    1. Fully agree, If the story is true as told. But would really like to know more about the case
as I know the D.A., (Who is just another Lawyer), will say anything to win another case, and its not very difficult to convict a man charged with that type of crime, where a persons (girl), word is considered ‘evidence’, and the Mans ‘Denial’  If you really think this is a bad joke, what would you call this case, as reported in the BDN, about a year ago. A female Teacher from Lubec, was charged, and admitted committing five counts of gross sexual assault against a young male student,  more then one count of providing alcohol to minors, along with providing a place to do so. The sentence imposed by the Court. Five days probation, all suspended. No sex offender list, no jail time, no nothing. This type of punishment happens a lot, when a female is convicted (If ever charged), but most men get the full range of entitlements offered by our corrupt system.  Some how, some way, we as a society must find a way to truly administrate ‘Equal Justice for all’.  One more thing to consider, girls today commit approximately 35% of all sexual crimes, yet less the 1%, are ever charged, and even less ever convicted.  This fact must change, or change our motto to, ‘Justice, as we (The Legal System), see it.

      1. I agree  and by all means change the motto.  I don’t care if someone is a male OR female.  If they commit a  crime against someone who is under age- they should each get a mandated set amount of time behind bars period male OR female- but they don’t and THAT would be why it’s a joke.  DA’s make deals all over the place and every time you read about a Steven Lake (domestic violence) or this type of  sex crime- the time these people get or frankly DON’T get is just ridiculous.

I have a friend who was molested by a neighbor from the time she was 6 until she said something at 9.  Come to find out there were 3 other little girls this slime ball had been touching as well.  My friend was the only one out of all the little girls who would testify against him in court  at 10 years of age.  Want to know how awful that was for her?  To have to describe in court in front of all these people the details of where he had touched her, how he had touched her and if she LIKED it?  Want to know what he got?  6 months of free counseling.  Want to know what my friend got?  Well certainly not 6 months of free counseling.  She received a  lifetime of trying to heal and put what happened to her behind her.  Seems fair don’t you think?  I will say that eventually this slime ball was lucky enough to get groin cancer which killed him…..and I must say it couldn’t of happened to a nicer guy.

I don’t want to get started on all the inane issues this country STILL has regarding gender equality or any of the other ridiculous inequalities this country likes to hold on to like a security blanket.  Your point that 35% of females commit sexual crimes ok..well then that leaves 65% for males…. still a wee bit disproportionate don’t you think?   As it is for males in any other violent crimes statistics area.  Unfortunately the statistics speak for themselves.  All sexual crimes are under reported for males and for females.  So change the motto by all means.

        1.  its just not that way – for many female criminals in sex crimes, assault, murder etc. they can get off on the “he abused me, or he did bad things to me” excuse. I think women should be equally punished for their crimes as men are.

          1. I do not know if the statistic has remained the same, but for cases in which women murdered their husbands, they were sentenced to twice as long as men who murdered their wives. Equal treatment? I think not.

          2. My final point was that statistics clearly show that males commit the vast majority of violent crimes in this country.  If you have actual statistics that you can cite to disprove my point re: males and violent crimes in this country by all means supply them and I will be more than happy to read them.  That being said I already know you cannot supply such statistics because it’s a statistical fact that males commit more violent crimes.  And no, I don’t hate males or females for that matter.  I happen to find facts helpful in understanding our social issues and helpful in what we may do to change such issues in this country.

Are there females that commit violent crimes?  Well, yes, of course there are- my point was that comparatively speaking males statistically commit more violent crimes against other males and against other females than females do as a group.   Facts are facts.  Should they be treated the same?   Sure- depending on what the extenuating circumstances may include.

If someone has been pounded on and threatened and abused and responds out of fear of their life…..think about Amy Lake who was murdered in Dexter along with her two children by her ex-husband Steven Lake.  Steven Lake broke several PFA orders, stalked her, followed her, threatened her and her children with a gun previously was arrested twice and out on $2000.00 bail in no time thanks to his father and still managed to kill Amy, both her children and them himself.  I don’t believe that if Amy had met him at the door with her own weapon anyone would have questioned her rationale of protecting her children and herself.  Now should things like that have to happen? No of course not, but we all live in an imperfect world as evidenced by what we read and see on the news everyday. So should genders be treated equally under the law?  Sure- so long as those extenuating circumstances are taken into consideration.

          3. I agreet that males vastly do commit more crimes than many women…but women should be equally punished

    2.  No…..with good behavior hill will be out in eight month. And thats only if he dosent have any day for day county time……its still a joke and not near enough time

  2. Seriously, a year confinement for this crime?  The judge, prosecuting attorney, and the individual who did the pre-sentencing report should be  embarrassed. All it is saying to predators is “Come to Maine..if you get caught you will get a slap on the wrist”.  I don’t care if he has four years probation.  No one can justify this atrocity. Should be a good reminder to parents to keep an eye on who their children are communicating with on social networking sites.

  3. Seriously, one year confinement for this atrocity? The judge, prosecuting attorney and person doing the pre-sentencing report should be embarrassed.   I don’t care if it calls for four years probation.  All this is saying to predators is ‘Come to Maine..even if you get caught you will only get a slap on the wrist.”  It is a good reminder to parents to keep an eye on who your children are communicating with on social networking sites.  There is a special place in hell for people like this.

  4. And when he gets out, he’ll probably head to Bangor, the sex offender capital of Maine. Seriously? One year? What judge allowed that ridiculous plea bargain?!?!

    1. Age of consent is 16 in the state of Maine. The 5 year rule your referring to would not even come close to applying in this case for several years. Parents need to be more aware about what their 13 year old daughters are doing online and via their cellphones. Parents also need to do way better at teaching their young sons that women are not disposable sex toys, as well as what they are doing online and via cell phones. It all comes down to behavior and that is learned from where?? You guessed right if you say Parenting. Neither person in this case got that.

  5. Judges in Maine seem way too lenient in my humble opinion. For some reason, this seems particularly true when it comes to sexual offenses against minors.

  6. HEY SEX OFFENDERS COME TO MAINE! YOU’LL ONLY GET ONE YEAR IN JAIL AND REGISTER FOR ONLY 10 YEARS!!!

ALSO – MURDERERS COME…NO DEATH PENALTY AND MORE THAN LIKELY LIKE STEVEN MAYO OF DOVER-FOXCROFT – EVEN IF YOU SHOOT YOUR OWN BROTHER IN COLD BLOOD YOU’LL ONLY GET 15 YEARS WITH ALL BUT 9 SUSPENDED!!!

  7. ONE YEAR?!!!! I’m sick!!!! The victim will suffer the rest of her life. The pervert will be out to do it again. Maine start doing it right!!!!

  8. One year and castration would be sufficient, but seriously one year is an absolute joke. What an insult to the victim and her family.
