SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A South Portland man is facing domestic violence assault charges after an argument between him and his girlfriend grew out of control, police said.

Swayambhu Chatterjee, 37, was arrested early Monday morning at his home on Wermuth Street, South Portland police Lt. Frank Clark said.

Chatterjee allegedly slapped the woman in the face during the argument, according to Clark, but she wasn’t seriously injured.

Chatterjee was booked into the Cumberland County Jail on the Class D misdemeanor charge. He faces up to a year in prison if convicted.

  1. How can this be a crime?
On TV I see women slapping men in the face all the time..  Sometimes it’s even in a comedy…. and no one ever gets arrested.. ever..

    1. Why is this even in the BDN?
This happened in S. Portland and it’s hardly even news to begin with.

    2. That is a good point. If it is illegal, I don’t think it should be so freely used on T.V.

People can and will get the wrong idea. Monkey see, monkey do.

  2. men are physically bigger and most are stronger than women. its a fact. any man that hits a woman is a dirtbag nd definetly not a real man. and its also wrong for a women to hit a man. its wrong for anyone to put their hands on anyone in violence. people need to control themselves!

      1. all i will say is that its not necessary to hit someone unless there’s no way out. especially someone smaller than yourself.

  3. Basic sandbox 101:  Play nice with the other kids and keep your hands to yourself.  This really doesn’t need to be rocket science.
