PORTLAND, Maine — A Vassalboro man was killed and another man was seriously injured early Sunday morning in a fatal car crash in Portland.

Portland police Lt. Robert Doherty said Sunday morning that Robert J. Hubbard, 23, of Vassalboro was pronounced dead at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Hubbard’s passenger, James Ronco, 24, address unknown, was seriously injured.

Doherty said Hubbard lost control of the Honda Civic he was driving at about 1:26 a.m. on Commercial Street, hit a curb on a curve in the road and collided with a pile of gravel. The accident happened near where Commercial Street meets West Commercial Street.

Doherty said no further details were available Sunday morning and that the cause of the accident remained under investigation. He asked anyone who witnessed the accident to contact the Portland Police Department’s traffic division at 784-8532.

    1. Just out beyond the congested area of the Old Port, after going out by the Casco Bay Bridge the road becomes West Commercial St……it appears they may have been exceeding the speed limit for the area….
