PORTLAND, Maine — A Livermore Falls man was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court to 10 days in federal prison for theft of public money.

Robert B. Hutton, 58, earlier this year admitted stealing nearly $35,000 in Social Security disability benefits, according to court documents.

U.S. District Judge George Singal also sentenced Hutton to three years of supervised release and ordered him to pay $34,496 in restitution.

Hutton, who has been free on personal recognizance bail since entering his guilty plea in June, was ordered to begin serving his sentence Dec. 5.

Hutton first claimed in 1999 and then again in 2006 that he was unable to work as a truck driver because of his physical condition. In June 2010, Hutton also reported to the Social Security Administration that he was not receiving any income.

An investigation revealed, however, that Hutton was paid $24,975 in 2008, $28,175 in 2009 and $10,450 through April 2010 by a Jay trucking company for his work as a driver, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Hutton’s work activities made him ineligible for the Social Security disability benefits he received.

Hutton faced up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

  1. Thief!  Stealing from those who truly need assistance.  Remember, many on the left say this doesn’t happen.

    1. And many on the right assume that anyone on assistance is stealing “their” money. This guy should get the maximum, but don’t let a few apples spoil the bushel.

    2.  And most o the right say it is immigrants or  other people from away  coming  here for our luxurious benefits  who are ripping off the system,  not “natives”.  And then they demand a picture to prove it . So no picture or demand for one?

  2. Sooner or later, doing the wrong thing catches up with a person. Let him face the consequences of his actions.

  3. “Hutton faced up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.”  However the  translation is he gets 10 days and restitution of $35,000.  See why people think it is OK to dupe the government or rob a pharmacy or bank. It should be if you steal you go to jail for 10 years you are fined $250,000 and restitution of $$$ . Maybe if the courts would throw the book at them it would send a message that crime doesn’t pay instead of crime pays I just need to do a few days in jail to make it work out and then go rob a bank (orbetter yet go steal the  cash in my wife’s retirement funds) to pay restitution because they would only have to do a few more days in jail and their attitude would be “what’s the big deal”. Also I have to wonder if he filed taxes for those years wages but we all know it was under the table don’t we. I don’t see any charges of failing to pay taxes on his wages but that would have been another 2 days to be served concurrent. Just saying…
