BAR HARBOR – Richard D. Strout, 63, died Oct. 25, 2012, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born May 7, 1949, in Bar Harbor, a son of Edward L. and Herthel T. Strout.
Richard was a graduate of Bar Harbor High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Vietnam War and then served in the U.S. Air National Guard. While in the service he received the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal and the Combat Infantrymen’s Badge 1st Award. Richard worked for the town of Mount Desert and Acadia National Park. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, maintaining his property, and spending time with family and friends. He will be fondly remembered by the Emerson School staff.
He is survived by his loving girlfriend of 14 years, Barbara Acorn; sons, Richard Strout Jr. of East Machias and Michael Strout and wife, Danna, of Granville, N.Y.; daughter, Theresa Dempsey of Columbia; grandchildren, Hunter and Schylar Dempsey, Lilly and Isacc Strout; special buddy, Damien Wilcomb; brothers, Ronnie, Bill, Robert, Steve, Alan and Edward; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Eddie Spurling. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Larry; and sister, Peggy.
Calling hours will be held 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor, with the Rev. Mary-Carol Griffin officiating. A full military honors service will be presented.
