BANGOR, Maine — With presidential, congressional, state and local races, a controversial same-sex marriage referendum and four bond issues on the ballot, election officials from some of Maine’s biggest cities reported strong voter turnout Tuesday.
Whether this will be a record year, however, remains to be seen.
“It’s hard for me to predict because this is my first year in Bangor,” said Bangor City Clerk Lisa Goodwin, who assumed her post at City Hall earlier this year. “From what we’ve had with absentee voting, I would predict that we would have a strong turnout but not as high as the last presidential .” The 2008 election drew about 16,000 of the city’s estimated 22,000 registered voters, or just over 70 percent.
Nicole Clegg, spokeswoman for the city of Portland, said turnout there was strong as well, though not overwhelmingly so. “It’s been consistent with the last presidential election,” she said. About 80 percent of the city’s registered voters turned out in 2008.
Goodwin and Clegg both said that fewer voters had requested absentee ballots than in previous years, a point also made by Megan Sanborn, special assistant to the Maine secretary of state.
Sanborn said Tuesday that turnout is usually strong for a presidential election.
Nearly 72 percent of registered Maine voters cast ballots in 2008, and when residents elected a president in 2004, the percentage was around 68 percent, she said.
This year’s same-sex marriage initiative also may draw voters to the polls, she said.
The Election Day scene at the Bangor Civic Center was lively, as voters streamed into the Bangor Civic Center to cast their votes. Because of the distance some voters had to park away from the polling cite, the city this year arranged to have four golf carts on hand to ferry people back and forth.
Many of the thousands who turned out were voting in Bangor for the first time. There were lines leading to each of the several registration tables in the lobby.
“We have never seen so many people register to vote [on Election Day],” said Bangor election worker Gerald Oleson, who has 15 years of experience with city elections under his belt.
“This is the most people I’ve ever seen here. I think this is a great turnout,” said Bangor voter Dick Kitchen, who voted Tuesday morning with his wife, Judy Kitchen. He said he did not come to the polls for any particular issue or candidate but because he and his wife are dedicated voters who participate in every election.
Gerry Palmer, a former City Council chairman, said he liked what he saw Tuesday.
“This is the American way, this is Bangor. It’s great to see the candidates. I think the new city clerk has got things well in hand,” Palmer said.
“This is the last presidential election in this building,” Palmer said. That is because construction is under way on the Cross Insurance Center nearby, and the civic center eventually will be torn down. Palmer said if he had his druthers, voting would be moved to the new center.
“I would very much support it being in the new facility,” he said. “I know that does not generate revenue but for such an import thing as voting, there should be an important place for that to happen in our community. I think the new arena is the place for that to happen.”
Bangor officials have not yet decided where residents will vote in the future.
As is the case at most Bangor elections, candidates for various state and local offices greeted voters at the main entrance.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, a Bangor resident, said Tuesday that she was able to vote in person because Congress is on break this week. That soon will change.
“We go back into session next week and there’s an awful lot of work to do in the lame duck session — an awful lot of work, like the entire budget — so it’s going to be very, very busy,” the Republican senator said after casting her ballot. “Too many issues have been put off until after the election, so I anticipate that when we reconvene next week, it will be nonstop until Christmas.
“The looming threats to the state of Maine are the expiration of all the tax relief that’s been in effect for the last decade [and] the very deep cuts in spending for defense, for education, for transposition, for biomedical research that go into effect in January unless we act,” she said.
“Economists have told us that the combination of the [two] would cause unemployment to go back to over 9 percent, so we simply must act to come up with a reasonable plan to deal with those issues, and that’s my No. 1 priority.”
Turnout was steady in some of Maine’s medium and smaller communities as well.
Brewer City Clerk Howard Kroll said that as of about 2 p.m., nearly 45 percent of the city’s voters had cast their ballots.
“It’s been steady all day,” Kroll said, adding that although all the voting booths at the Brewer Auditorium were occupied at any given time Tuesday morning and afternoon, the waiting lines were short.
“When all is said and done, I think we’ll see somewhere between 70 and 85 percent,” he said.
Hermon also was seeing large numbers of voters, according to interim Town Clerk Ruth Nickerson.
“We haven’t had an empty booth all day. We’ve had 1,723 voters come in so far,” Nickerson said with four hours to go before the polls were scheduled to close.
“Things are running smoothly. We are one of the towns [that the state has provided with] a new tabulator. People are adjusting to the change and the line out is a little slow, but otherwise everything is going well.”

Thank goodness we can vote quickly in Maine.
These other states have people waiting 5 and 10 hours in line. It is a travesty and an outrage.
I think it is a Republican effort to make voting as difficult as possible for the average working people!
Ever notice where the lines are at??? Places with democrat mayors !
Election Protection Group thugs went to a place in Florida in a black neighborhood and complained when the organization True the Vote tried to hand out bottles of water to people who stood in line for 6 hours or more and accused them of bribing people to vote for Obama with the water.
Romney not a people person.

“Travesty and outrage”? That’s a bit over the top. It’s a small price to pay. You just expect everything to be easy, like receiving government checks.
No not really, what I do expect is that the people who died for my right to vote did not die so others have to wait 10 hours in line to do it.
nothing in our society is more precious than voting and it should be swift and easy
I still think it was a mistake to get rid of same day voter registration in this state. I think we should be encouraging more people to vote, not less. On the other hand, being able to vote early is a good thing.
We didn’t get rid of it! Same day voter registration is still the law in Maine.
Then what was all the stuff in the papers about last day to register to vote before this election? Were people just misinformed and passing it on to the rest of us? If so, I stand corrected once again and thank you for letting me know.
That notice was for the last day to vote via absentee ballot. From Maine.gov website: “An absentee ballot request must be received by the Municipal Clerk by the close of business on Thursday, November 1, 2012, unless special circumstances exist.”
No worries, the ‘last day’ warnings were for early voting and voting by absentee ballot. You can still register the same day as the election.
Last time I knew they hadn’t gotten rid of it. City officias were registering people this morning in Brewer
Yes i watched a young man come in with a telephone bill and did not know the zip code where he lives.Yet he still got to vote.
As he should. If he satisfied all of the requirements necessary to complete his registration form, he has just as much right to vote as you do.
Is knowing your zip code a requirement in order to vote in the US? Who knew….
People were registering here today.
Can you get there from here?
Yes, Maine still allows it and sets up potential for voter fraud. Even mega liberal Massachustetts does not allow same day registration.
Maine has it right.
Massachusetts is a much bigger state than us. Either way, same day registration is very popular in this state, if you can’t point to any real examples of fraud then you shouldn’t burden people. It’s like saying you think there might be a draft coming through your window and then installing all new windows in your entire house — it’s a solution in search of a problem that doesn’t exist.
Election day voter registration is still available in Maine, you can also register the same day you vote early if you need to.
I have several friends who have moved around in the last 2-4 years and they had to re-register at their new polling place.
It was repealed by a vote of the people, by the people, for the people.
You can register todyy. I suggest you go do it!!
The networks are going to have a BIG sale on ads after the election.
I bought it when I saw it at Mardens.
I think every Presidential Election Day should be considered a holiday
That sounds good on paper, however what do most people do with their other holidays? Do they go to the parades on Memorial day? A few, but most go camping, fishing or get ready for summer. In addition can government afford to give another paid holiday to millions of local, state and federal workers? What about just having the poles open for 3 or 4 days instead of one. Early voting could still be done as well. Weekend voting would bring more people into the process too. I agree with the gist of what you are saying; voting should be made as easy as possible in order to get the most participation.
Well why not just open up voting for every day of the year? Make it available at all hours, on the web, over the phone. Let’s hire government workers to go door to door with ballots ready to help you vote in the comforts of your home. After all it is November, and its cold outside, and I don’t want to have to get into my cold car and drive a few miles to the town office. Its such an inconvenience for everybody, maybe we should just get rid of voting all together.
Or maybe, we stop being selfish and accept the fact that our country asks very little of us. We have one very simple duty once you hit the age of 18–set aside one day out of the entire year in November where you get to offer your opinion on the direction your community, state, and nation heads. I am completely disgusted by so many people in this country who think our government must bend over backwards to meet their needs. Stop it! I am so sick of the excuses, complaints, and lame reasons why its so horrendous and inconceivable to do one simple thing, vote on the first Tuesday in November. Enough already. Its not a surprise when it happens, it never changes, its no different than setting aside a day for your anniversary, birthday, Christmas or whatever else you do for yourself. Its one day a year. Get out and vote and stop making pitiful excuses as to why you cannot get to the polls on election day. How hard is this simple task? You don’t need to make a big deal about it. You are no more special than anyone else. Just vote, do it, and feel good that you did something worthwhile for your country. It doesn’t matter who you vote for or what you believe in, just stop making excuses and vote. Don’t make government and everyone else work around you–for once, stop being selfish and do something for your country and stop thinking about yourself–a tough task, I know, but still–just try.
That straw man is dead, dead, dead. You nailed em! :D
My word! I can’t help but notice the logic in this comment. More than that, I can not believe that you mentioned CHRISTMAS. Have you no decency, Fennis?
I feel like my Dad yelled at me for not taking out the trash 50 years ago. In all seriousness there are folks standing in lines for hours trying to vote around the country. I think we’ll see some legal challenges based on some of the rules changes pertaining to early voting as well. Personally I’m against voting 3 and 4 weeks before the actual election, that’s before most of the debates. I’ll not complain or suggest something different than you. I promise father.
That is fine and great but how do you handle the large numbers of people in the rest of the country, a large portion of the elderly/disabled would not be able to stand in line for hours in the cold, without risk to their health. What about people who do not have cold vehicles to get into? but have to use public transit or walk. There are many reasons for early voting. Maine is blessed by not having a large population but many places are not, so the early/absentee voting just makes sense. So remember not all people are as lucky as you are and have the ability or resources to be able to vote during one day of the year. There were a whole lot less people when the rules were created, sometimes you need new rules. One more thing not everybody celebrates Christmas and if everybody shared the same birthday some people would want an early birthday don’t you think.
I have no problem with the elderly, disabled, military away from home, or even college students using absentee ballots, but anyone else should be out there on election day at the polls.
Thank you for nit picking my random selection of days that people will alter their lives/routines for. I understand not everyone celebrates Christmas, not everyone celebrates birthday’s either…that wasn’t even remotely the point to my rant. Thank you for paying attention so closely. Fill in whatever day is so very important to you as a substitute if that allows you to understand things more clearly.
We pay for this country, yes they should bend over backwards and then some,
Fine. Too many people take our freedoms, paid for by others w/blood & sacrifice, for granted. Make it a holiday. Then do away w/the early voting, set criteria for absentee ballots that is reflective of those who truly need the same. Voting should not be a “convenience,” especially looking @ other areas of this world where people literally risk their lives to enjoy some form of a democratic or republican process. Too much lip service, knee jerk talking points, petty partisanship, etc. & yes, corruption does infest & infect this most basic right. On the other hand the American electorate w/all the warts does represent who we are collectively.
I agree. It’s not the same as a holiday, but I believe employers have to let employees have time off to vote. Of course, in Florida that would be the whole day is some places.
Or a funeral…………..
I think we should hold it on a weekend nationally, or allow early voting nationally.
Maine has things set up well, though. The way life should be!
I just game from voting in Bangor about 30 mins ago. There was a huge line to register, not sure why people wait till the last second to do it but a lot did. As for me. I walked in, had to wait behind 3 people to get my ballots and then voted. Took about 10 minutes to complete the process.
Not a bad idea, but it would likely turn out to be a big day for shopping and sales rather than a day devoted to voting. I guess we could move the voting booths to the Maine Mall.
That one booth looks happy to see someone.
BDN: Come for the articles. Stay for the commentary. :)
Prediction..Romney takes 2nd district, Raye beats Michaud, Rs hold State Senate, Same Sex Marriage, loses by 1%
Prediction:
Obama wins with between 305 and 315 electoral votes.
He will take swing states New Hampshire, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado, Ohio but not Florida, Nebraska or North Carolina.
Democrats pick up at least a one-seat addition to their majority in the US Senate (counting King).
Republicans will retain control of the US House by a slightly narrowed margin.
Both Pingree and Michaud win – neither race close.
Democrats pick up a majority in the Maine House and reduce the GOP majority in the State Senate.
It will be close, but the Democrats may elect the next Treasurer, Atty. General and Secretary of State due to a narrow majority in the combined legislature.
Same gender marriage wins by more than 1%.
Governor LePage will not be happy,…but he never is anyway.
Hey, you forgot to mention PA for Obama where the ‘Black Panthers’ are intimidating the voting process.
Sounds like you might be right. At least I hope so.
Always good to be optimistic in ones predictions, though I wouldn’t wager much on any of those, save R’s holding state senate.
when was the last time the republicans took office without Nixon or a Bush on the ticket?
I’ll even give you the answer.
1928.
Lose Much ? You left out Nichi ,who also was left out.
I like voting in my small town. Just a big black X next to all the names, in a few old but sturdy hand made voting booths.
No lines, no waiting.
There was a big line for voter registration in Bangor at 245 pm.. You can vote for 6 weeks prior to the election, yet the college kids all show up on election day to register.
they’ll figure it out eventually :) all of us did.
Why do you care? Why does it matter?
Some work schedules coincide with the town office. No way to register before then. Glad they’re open ’til 8. I’ll gladly wait my turn, and state law says as long as I’m in line, I can’t be denied the right to vote.
I did notice this that in MD, is that what the line was ?And yes this is where college kids would vote, ??? Thanks for the info…
LOL, you know the Republicans aren’t feeling too great, over at Fox News they’re screaming about the Black Panthers! I smell desperation :)
They have to be desperate!! They’ve called this registered Democrat who’s already voted 16 times over the last 3 days!! That’s what I call desperation!!
You’ve already voted 16 times! Proof of fraud! Context not necessary! :D
Oh, where is Charlie?
Left the commas out!1 Demodrat, who’s already voted, 16 times. Only voted once, That’s all I’m allowed by law. Sorry, no fraud here.
No, that’s just you………
No it’s the Recraplicans……..
No, it’s the ‘Demo-Rats’.
All of the above
No, I smell ‘Intimidation’ which would be par for Obama and his cronies.
Just got a call from the RNC stop the dems from raising the deficit haha Lets see Carter and Clinton lowered it . Both Bushes Reagan and Obama raised it . ? they need to come up with better answers than just lowering taxes . Obama is weak he would not have been that hard to beat it they had real clear points to run on . Lets not blame lets fix .
Right, vote Johnson.
Just a few more hours and the presidents security team will have to fire up moving van 1 .
Where is Charlie Summers? I hope he is lQQking for voter fraud!
For those “R” types screaming about voter intimidation, have a look at WHO is doing the intimidating.
“Voters challenged in Auburn allowed to vote”
http://www.sunjournal.com/news/aclu/0001/11/30/voters-challenged-auburn-allowed-vote/1276893
AUBURN – A pair of Somali immigrants had their right to vote
challenged at the Ward 1 polling place at Washburn School Tuesday, an
attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine said.
A male poll watcher from the Republican Party challenged the women’s
citizenship, questioning whether they were legal to vote, but did not go
through with a formal challenge, according to Alisha Melnick, an
attorney with the ACLU.
So it begins……………..
Only one screaming is you…OMG
You guys crack me up….. Get a life…LOL
Dee Dee hey that’s didi now add mau and you can didi mau (go away quickly).

Every time I see the do nothing Collins grabbing a headline, I want to throw up.
This just in…………… tremendous explosion at Clear Channel headquarters, reports are that Rush Limbaughs head “just blew up” there are many casualties as Rush was surrounded by drooling, ranting, and raving people wearing white sheets referred to as ” Zippohead”,errrrrrrr we have a correction that would be Dittoheads. Fox Snooze is reporting that many were injured but that most of the injured were just covered with BS from the explosion, and will not require medical care. Rush has been Rushed to his playground, errrrrrrr home in the Dominican Republic where his physician is treating him with Oxycontin and Viagra. His recovery is in doubt. LMGDFAO!
Judging by the colorful stripes and her manly cut, it would apear that Collins just exited a barber shop instead of the voting booth..
