Sen. Susan Collins said Tuesday it was “imperative” that retired Gen. David Petraeus, who resigned last week as head of the CIA, answer questions about the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya. She also said members of Congress needed to learn more about how much the general’s “friend” knew about secret military and intelligence information.
“There are so many unanswered questions at this point,” Sen. Collins said when asked about Petraeus at a press conference with Sen.-elect Angus King.
Petraeus, who led the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan, resigned as head of the CIA Friday after it was revealed that he had had an affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.
“I am puzzled by much of what has occurred in the FBI investigation,” Collins said. “And also the latest information that perhaps Gen. Petraeus’ friend had access to some classified information. We don’t know if that’s true or not.”
The FBI began an investigation earlier this year after another woman notified the agency that she was receiving harassing emails from Broadwell, who apparently saw her as a romantic rival. The woman, Jill Kelley, was a friend of the Petraeuses and hosted military events at her Tampa home.
NBC News reported that Broadwell was “under FBI investigation for improperly trying to access [Petraeus’] email and possibly gaining access to classified information,” citing law enforcement officials.
The investigation uncovered that Petraeus and Broadwell had an affair.
“I will say that I think it is absolutely imperative that Gen. Petraeus come and testify,” added Sen. Collins, who is the ranking Republican on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
In that capacity, she and Sen. Joe Lieberman, the committee chairman, launched an investigation into the Benghazi attacks. There are numerous questions about why U.S. officials didn’t anticipate the attacks, which killed four, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, and why there was not more security at the embassy.
Many of us would like to know what led up to and what truthfully did happen in Benghazi. During the first public hearings, it seemed the State Department had other things on their mind then the safety and support of the Americans stationed there.

Anyway, I think this was a garden variety affair. Period. The FBI has stated that no laws were broken, there will be no arrests, and no security issues were violated.
Patraeus, to his credit, has held himself “accountable” by coming clean without any ambiguity, and has resigned. His career, witch was still on the way up is FINISHED.

Tri brings up a few things I am concerned with aside of the Benghazi story. Petreaus has always been a political toady more than a military man.
And though I don’t believe there is any sinister conspiracy regarding Benghazi, I do not think the administration was entirely honest and forthcoming about it either. Is it the most pressing issue? No, certainly not, though that does not mean it should not be investigated thoroughly. Americans died. We owe it to them at least.
A few short years back the Republicans lambasted the Democrats for their demands to investigate the lies behind Iraq. They didn’t want to talk about the past, they just wanted to move on. This partisan game that both sides play is disgusting. Either you want and care about an honest, transparent government that is held accountable or you don’t.
Democrats care when the other team is in the white house, and Republicans care when the other team is in the white house, but not vice versa. The staggering hypocrisy in this country makes me ill.

My opinion, and to put it frankly, is that collectively Democrats don’t have the stones to elect Feingold.
I think if Democrats were interested in qualifications and professionalism, he’d be a very good choice. And heck, another first (first Jewish prez), would be a nice bonus.
Another cult of personality type ala Obama might be more likely (or ack, Hillary), though I think with the work Feingold is currently doing with his progressives united (the folly of Citizens United is becoming clearer to both sides I believe), his past stances on both the wars, the patriot act and other civil rights issues, as well as his proven ability to work with the other party…I think it would be a bold and logical choice. I have a question for Collins: “How does a woman so accurately resemble an elderly blackbird.?” And now that the election is over, why is she suddenly so eager to pursue the situation in which our ambassador was killed? She’s a political hack if there ever were one. I’ve seen other comments referring to her as a republican. Yea, right. She is opportunistic, and that’s about as deep as she is.
What cover up? I’ve read the transcripts of the conversations at the time of the attacks and the security planning. What I see is some very bright, experienced people on the ground who had a good plan that worked. The Ambassador and Smith got separated in the smoke and died. That’s unfortunate, but it is essentually a war zone.
The attack on the annex was clearly the real objective. The embassy might have only been a diversion. The important thing is it was repelled with the resources available. The whole idea that we can just drop bombs in the middle of a city is why these people are angry.
President Obama clearly stated that the attacks were under investigation. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill for the sole purpose of political gain.
What is interesting though is why the attack on the annex? What made it worth the risk? Some information coming out now suggests that the CIA was holding prisoners in violation of Obama’s order.

The suggestion from the right has been that Obama didn’t want to admit that Benghazi was a terrorist attack because….well, I’m not sure, exactly. Something about how this would blow a hole in his claim to be decimating al-Qaeda via drone attacks. Or maybe it would remove some of the luster from being the killer of Osama bin Laden. Or something. But one way or another, the story is that Obama was deeply afraid of admitting that terrorists are still out there and want to do us harm.
This has never made a lick of sense. If anything, the continuing existence of terrorists justifies his drone attacks. And it certainly wouldn’t do him any

you do realize Patreaus was, leading up to the primaries, discussed as a GOP Presidential possible. Originally a Bush appointee, Obama promoted him as head of the CIA in a bipartisan gesture, as well as acknowledgement of Patreaus being the best man for the job.

My questions are more to Gen. Allen. Not about personal impropriety with the Dr’s Wife, but that he used his position to escalate his friend’s personal request (far from a national security issue, the ‘harassing’ emails were more potentially embarrassing than threatening). This was an inappropriate use of his authority.
My second question, is how and why proper/established rules of communication were skirted? The issue to me, is not so much David Patreaus’s cheating, but they way in which it was revealed.
