ORONO, Maine – University of Maine men’s basketball head coach Ted Woodward has announced the signing of Garet Beal to a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Maine in the Fall of 2013 and play on the men’s basketball team.
“This is a very exciting day for our program and its future,” said Woodward. “Garet Beal has been a fantastic young man and player we have been following since the beginning of his high school career. He has a great work ethic, and is an extremely versatile player with tremendous potential as a college player. It has been a pleasure recruiting him, and I have enjoyed the relationships that we have established with Garet’s family and the entire Jonesport- Beals community. Furthermore, he is a product of great tradition at Jonesport-Beals, and the Maine MAC Basketball Program. They have prepared him well for his outstanding college experience that lies ahead. We are proud to have him as a Black Bear and we are eagerly looking forward to his career with us.”
Beal, a 6-5 200 lbs. guard, led his Jonesport-Beals team to its first Maine class ‘D’ state championship since 1993 last season. He was named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year, becoming just the second underclassmen to ever receive the award along with being named first team all-state. He averaged 22.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.8 steals, 3.6 assists and 1.6 blocks per game while also earning Eastern Maine Tournament Most Valuable Player honors last season.
The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Congratulations Garet on choosing UMaine to pursue your Division I basketball career.I am proud of the way you have handled yourself on and off the court over the years and represented yourself and the town of Beals in a positive way.It was a thrill to watch a pair of fellow islanders in Sandi Carver and Jan Beal play their college ball at the Division I level at UMaine and the University of New Hampshire respectively.I look forward to watching you and your Royals teammates in the upcoming high school campaign and wish you the very best as you embark on your college career at UMaine.Well done Garet.
saw this kid play last year…..he is the real deal. Too bad he won’t play against anyone at his level this season.
Hope he likes the sofa because that is where he will be watching the NCAA Tournament from since he will be playing for the team that has the longest streak of futility of any D1 program in the history of college basketball. :) :)
ZERO NCAA & NIT appearances, and ZERO conf titles since 1904. No one else even comes close to this NCAA futility record. No one.
Can’t you say ANYTHING positive? Good luck Garet
