BANGOR, Maine — Citing a longstanding battle with upper management over journalistic practices at their Bangor TV stations, news co-anchors Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio announced their resignations at the end of Tuesday’s 6 p.m. newscast.
Michaels and Consiglio, who have a combined 12½ years’ service at WVII (Channel 7) and sister station WFVX (Channel 22), shocked staff members and viewers with their joint resignations Tuesday evening.
“I just wanted to know that I was doing the best job I could and was being honest and ethical as a journalist, and I thought there were times when I wasn’t able to do that,” said Consiglio, a northeastern Connecticut native who broke in with WVII as a sports reporter in April 2006.
Not everyone was shocked by the on-air resignations.
“No, that was unfortunate, but not unexpected,” said Mike Palmer, WVII/WFVX vice president and general manager. “We’ll hire experienced people to fill these positions sooner rather than later.”
Neither reporter had told anyone of their decisions before Tuesday’s newscast.
“We figured if we had tendered our resignations off the air, we would not have been allowed to say goodbye to the community on the air and that was really important for us to do that,” said Michaels, the station’s news director, who has spent six of her 15 years in Bangor’s radio and TV market at WVII.
Both Michaels, 46, and Consiglio, 28, said frustration over the way they were allowed or told to do their jobs — something that has been steadily mounting for the last four years — became too much for them.
“There was a constant disrespecting and belittling of staff and we both felt there was a lack of knowledge from ownership and upper management in running a newsroom to the extent that I was not allowed to structure and direct them professionally,” Michaels explained. “I couldn’t do everything I wanted to as a news director. There was a regular undoing of decisions.”
While choosing not to respond to individual complaints or charges, Palmer did take issue with the former anchors’ characterization of management’s role.
“Upper management is not involved in the daily production of the news. Period,” said Palmer, who had just finished posting online job opening ads in his office at 10 p.m. Tuesday. “We’ve made great changes over the last few months and are not slowing down.”
Michaels said there were numerous things that contributed to their decisions.
“It’s a culmination of ongoing occurrences that took place the last several years and basically involved upper management practices that we both strongly disagreed with,” she explained. “It’s a little complicated, but we were expected to do somewhat unbalanced news, politically, in general.”
Neither Michaels nor Consiglio would say what specific political leaning they were expected to adopt.
Consiglio, who also was executive producer, said the balanced journalistic approach they use for all their stories was sometimes frowned upon.
Both reporters said they do not have anything lined up in terms of jobs in the media.
“This is one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made. This is my career and I love doing it,” Consiglio said. “I’m looking at some options, but whether they’re in this industry or not is something I’ll find out.”
Both said they were of similar mindsets and the idea to resign is something they had talked about for a long time, so they felt it was right to make it a joint decision.
“Broadcasting is a love for both of us,” said Michaels. “We definitely will miss not being able to come into folks’ living rooms and I hope there’s no hard feelings from the community for this decision we’ve made, but we felt we had to do it.”
And as for Michaels’ future plans?
“I’ve started freelance writing, but I don’t know what I’m going to do either,” she said.
Palmer said the station held an impromptu staff meeting, which everyone attended despite it being nonmandatory.
“Everyone came in, even if they weren’t working,” said Palmer. “Everyone volunteered to do whatever had to be done to keep things moving forward.”
Palmer pointed out the stations’ expansion effort, which began last year with the addition of staff, equipment and newscast programming.
“Over the last 15 to 18 months, we’ve been a raging locomotive of change,” he said. “The capital improvements to the building, the technological changes. We have added 10 full-time jobs with benefits here to payroll. We had to expand the parking lot because of adding so many people.
“The promise we’re making to everyone is this locomotive is not stopping,” he said.
Palmer pointed out his station is bucking an industry trend toward downsizing.
“I’m very proud, given how things are going from here to San Diego, to add 10 jobs and grow the business,” he said.
He said the stations’ ownership already has seen its proactive approach pay off.
“We’ve invested in the community and the community has rewarded us financially in the form of advertising revenue,” he said.
Michaels said there were a lot of shocked looks by staff when they closed their 6 p.m. newscast with their resignations.
“I was scared to make this decision,” she said. “[News anchoring is] a great thing to do as well as a great place to do it in. I’ve been lucky to do this. We’ve had a great opportunity here and I will miss it.”

Good for you! Integrity feels great, doesn’t it?
I’ve had to take an uncomfortable stand a few times in my life and it only hurt for a little bit, then it turned into a wonderful feeling knowing I had done what was right. Good luck to you both!
You two will be missed.
Integrity in the media. Imagine that.
They will both do well. Hurray for honesty and they both deserve all good. This is the best news in ages. Happy Thanksgiving.
How do you come to that conclusion? Perhaps they wanted to slant the news THEIR way, and management didn’t want it slanted.
Did you not read the article?
It says in the article that they engaged a balanced approach to reporting, and upper management didn’t like that.
“Consiglio, who also was executive producer, said the balanced journalistic approach they use for all their stories was sometimes frowned upon.”
They work for a FOX/ABC affiliate who downplayed the 6PM news cast (on the ABC dial) to emphasize their 10pm on FOX which utilized a lot more national Fox News packages.
This isn’t the first ideologcal tiff that the talent has had with management at ‘circle 7’ either. Remember years ago when the GM said he didnt want his station reporting on climate change until “Bar Harbor is under water.”Unfortunately WVII is run by a rich man who thinks his opinions should be broadcast as news. We have far too much of that in this day and age, and I am glad to see Cindy and Tony take a stand against it.
Now that’s a stretch.
sorry to see you go
Bravo! Start your own news. Reality Check did it! We sure could use something local!
Journalists are to state facts and allow the viewer/listener to make up their own mind. Somehow management has decided to present the facts that favor their bias then tell the viewer/listener what to think. Be proud that you are an honest journalist.
Employees are to do the bidding of management! Airing their problems publically tells me they are not good employees! Good riddance!
Here folks, is an admirer of people not telling the truth. Royal Scam? Yes, exactly what you follow.
I agree.
Not when it contradicts the basic tenets of the profession.. hence war crimes trials for those who follow orders that contravene international law. In this case the CLAIM is that management did not respect basic journalistic tenets.. not illegal, but if true, unprofessional. Unfortunately, no one loves a rat.. good luck to them finding jobs.. maybe NPR is hiring.
actually i hear that walmart will have several open positions on saturday
Since when does standing for your morals and showing integrity and character make you a rat? They didnt’ get anyone arrested – they left their own jobs with nothing else lined up. They took big risks that most ppl wouldn’t have the cajones to do.
Do you say this about union members who go on strike?
I can’t imagine anything more public than that.
I find it interesting the reporters made clear there is an editorial bias, and management call itself a “locomotive of change”…sounds about right.
Management sounds more like a locomotive trying to railroad its employees.
Exactly right. The left hates Fox News because they report the truth. Nielsen ratings also shows that fox ( national ) news has been number 1 in ratings for the past ten years. Typical lefties just mad at anyone’s success. They thrive on keeping America down while us on the right work hard to lift it.
If you had been listening to foxnews before the election, they would have been reporting to you the “truth” that Mitt Romney would win the election.
Romney would have won the election had it been held before Obama got to pretend to be the Savior of everyone hit by Hurricane Sandy, and without enormous voter fraud.
fox news telling the truth? when did they start?
Compared to the rest of the news broadcasters, there is no comparison to their honesty!
great joke, tell another
Do you know anything at all about Rupert Murdoch? Google is your friend.
a good employee does not just blindly follow a boss’s “bidding” if the boss is wrong!
They did the community a service by letting them know that things were not right.
Good for them, I doubt they’ll be out of work for long, there are still some stations out there who don’t promote their own agenda.
You forgot rah rah LePage! :P
Too bad that went out like in the 80s, been a long time that facts have been reported without a bias.
Impressive. I hope we see you both soon!
WVII is the worst news ever. It looks like a high school news production.
Here here!
…or rather, “hear, hear”.
They had news????? Well, watching someone sit at a desk and have to click a mouse to run the news program showed how little was put into the news department. Was painful to watch so I don’t. With the internet you can get up to date news much faster then waiting for it to come on TV.
I remember noticing that very thing! It seemed to start a little over a year ago. I thought, “geez, they’re cutting the news budget to the bone now aren’t they.” I felt bad for the news anchors. I spoke with one of their reporters earlier this year and he/she complained that the staffing had been drastically reduced to the point that they were their own producers, cameramen, editors, all on top of being a reporter too. No way to do news. News in America has suffered in general. I’m old enough to remember watching Walter and to me that was what news ought to be. As unbiased as possible and much more worldly than the info-tainment industry that has replaced it.
How entitled! Do they need limo drivers too? Just do your job and be grateful your employer sees fit to pay you more than they have to (ie “minimum wage”). Rah rah Count Your Blessings!
you seem to know all about minimum wage jobs
Thank You Cindy and Tony. Your problem is not simply local a concern, but worldwide. For the most part we are being spoon fed just what they want us to hear and see. I appreciate your integrity and devotion to the truth.
Having had some contact behind the scene at WVII, they are speaking the truth.
What a hoot!
It is the huge loss for WVII. I am so proud for the both of you fine journalists.!! My favorite local news team. Great human beings. Sometimes management is what out puts a business for their arrogant attitudes!! You will be missed! I always sensed a honesty, from both these journalists, really rare to have that feeling about journalists; in this greed era!!! The very best of luck! Keep on smiling, you both have great smiles!!! and your personality always shone through. HUGS
I agree with you, hand on heart, but enough with the exclamation points!!!!!!!!
HAHA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So for 6 years no problem cashing the check but also no problem tearing apart superiors for all the general public to see. Integrity? Good luck nailing that next job. Curious. The upper management didn’t tear you both apart in the media right. You stay classy San Diego.
You say that as if they never did anything to earn that check.
Maybe after years of beating their heads against a wall with the ‘raging locomotive” of management, they had enough.
Something tells me they won’t have a problem finding another job.
Wow. Gutsy. Hope we see more of this.
somehow get the feeling we haven’t heard the last of you guys.
good luck
You two have restored a bit of faith in the media. Thank you so much for your honesty. Perhaps you two could start your own truly unbiased news either on the internet, in print or on TV. Maybe you could even write a book about how corrupt the media has become. There definitely needs to be some competition here. With $u$$man owning most of the print media in Maine we are in dire need of some balance. This was evident with the last election.
Good god won’t someone post a video of this?! They didn’t even mention it on the 11pm news. The worst part was that I had to watch the WVII 11pm news to find that out. I’ll never get that half-web-surfing half-listening time back. Good for both of them though. I’d jump ship on that station too.
Being an affiliate of Fox Snooze one could imagine what “political leanings” they were told to follow. Like a steamy pile of BS from BS mountain would be my guess.
WVII is an ABC Affiliate.
WFVX is Fox Snooze AKA BS mountain and both are owned by Rockfleet Broadcasting. These news people worked for both ABC and Fox Snooze so if I had to guess which station wanted to skew, spin, lie or lay bare their “political leanings” in their so called news it would be Fox rather than ABC.
The station is not owned by ABC or Fox, so the influence would not have come from either network. Besides, Fox the network and Fox News are different departments.
Did you read the article that Gofigure posted? By the way if you read what I wrote you would know that Rockfleet Broadcasting owns them both. Try to spin it any way you like this has the smell of Murdock Mudraking all over it. PS If I am suspicious of anything associated with Fox……… well I have plenty of reason to back up any suspicions that I have.
I wouldn’t blame Murdoch for this. He doesn’t even like Fox news. Roger Ailes, yes. But not Murdoch.
I have seen no connection at all between Fox Broadcasting and Rockfleet. Please explain how Rupert Murdock has influence over a third-place television station (an ABC affiliate, at that) in one of the smallest television markets. And why someone of Murdoch’s stature would care about such an inconsequential station in the first place.
The Joy of Hate surfaces again… Sad.
Where do you get your misinformation?
Well if I am just looking for misinformation I go to Fox Snooze isn’t that where everyone goes for misinformation?????
Management stood up against the global warming hoax! That’s all you need to know! Fair and balanced and these two just weren’t on board!
and the world is only 6000 years old and jesus rode on dinosaurs righhhhhhhhhhhhhtttttttttt
And there were lots of cars burning carbon during the ice age that made it all melt.
Did you by any chance mean: “The Global Warming Hoax Hoax”? You know, the hoax supported by big oil money . . .
no the hoax supported via government grants funded by taxes on the the labor, products and capital produced by “Big Oil”
wthout “big oil” dollars, you have no government
more conservative bs—“These tax breaks were mostly established decades ago to stimulate oil drilling and production on U.S. shores. The five firms that qualify for the breaks are now among the most well-established and profitable companies in the world. Two of them–BP and Royal Dutch Shell–aren’t even American companies. Along with the other three–Exxon Mobil, Chevron and ConocoPhillips–the five companies combined earned $116 billion in profits in 2011. If the tax breaks were eliminated and the whole tally came straight out of the bottom line, with no offsetting savings, the total decline in profits would be a paltry 1.8 percent.
from US NEWS, hardly a liberal mag
I’m not sure which is more amusing…the liberals that are offended by your posts, or the “conservatives” that think your sarcasm is representative of the truth. :D
Good news for Bar Harbor… http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/30/business/media/30warming.html?_r=2&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&adxnnlx=1162217176-xIhLM9/TFgHxLcTsuL5NXg&pagewanted=print&
Good article shows that these guys have been opposed to science and any type of intellectual discussions on GW from the git go. They do march like little tin soldiers to the Murdoch music machine.
I remember that article; thanks for posting the link so I could be reminded about what a tool Mike Palmer is.
The channel that nobody watches?
SO proud of both of you! I truly believed that integrity in the main stream media was a thing of the past. I applaud you both for standing up for TRUE journalism. You will be rewarded with great new positions where you will be able to do what you know is right. Of that, I have no doubt. Thank you for your integrity!
I’m a former employee of WVII. I worked there for 10 years before I was fired for trumped up “Hostile Workplace” charges. And I can say, with all certainty, that Mike Palmer is the worst Manager I’ve ever worked for. So, good for the News Team in deciding to move on. Everything out there is better than working for Palmer.
I don’t know Palmer. However, his comments give some indication of his management style. “Raging locomotive” sounds like an authoritarian, “my way or the highway” leadership style. “We’ll hire experienced people to fill these positions sooner rather than later” indicates how pissed off Palmer is and the continuing personnel head aches.
You’re right I’m sure. His style sounds very GOP to me. Notice how he kept saying that they were adding jobs, with benefits, as though that made everything else they did OK. My guess is that Ms. Michaels and Mr. Consiglio weren’t putting enough right-wing spin on their political stories.
LOL….every democrat boss I have ever worked for has been a low self-esteem control freak
You people could not be more spot on.
sounds like you have had several bosses/jobs . what does that say about you?
Perhaps the station was paid off by the O Admin to slant the news like CNN, which enabled them to hire more ppl and expand bldg & parking lot “for the past 4 yrs”. The reporters seemed to be hinting at that.
http://www.starnow.com/cindymichaels
I think Cindy will find work no problem.
Sounds like management wants to be Fox News and manipulate and distort the news instead of reporting it. Kudos and good luck!
Sounds like the two former anchors are the ones with the agenda! Did anyone else quit? Nothing to see here! Biting the hand that feeds isn’t the American way!
kissing the butt of the right wing wealthy isn’t the american way
“Somewhat unbalanced news”? Wonder what Cindy meant by that?
So bottom line, they got mad because they’re libruls. It’s no secret
management favored fair and balanced news at WVII but theses two weren’t on
board. Doesn’t look like anyone’s following them out the door in solidarity! Thanks for showing your true colors, you’ll be on MSNBC in no time! Well, they’ll do a story on you, but no one likes insubordination or being trashed on the air! Hope it was worth it! Please find jobs soon so Me the People don’t have to pay your bills! Rah rah LePage!
WVII news has been dead-last in the ratings for years, so it’s hard to blame all the problems on management. It’s a miracle that a small market like Bangor can support four TV stations, anyhow.
While I truly respect their personal integrity, I’d like to wish them luck landing that next gig after leaving this one so publicly…it’s tough out here in no-job land…
Won’t happen! Grown-ups that run businesses don’t value rabble-rousers and insubordination!
Exactly. While I’m not a front-of-camera personality, I’ve been looking for a media-related job for over two years (not all of it here in ME). And the Maine market is small, especially in their particular niche…again, I wish them luck!
So let’s all sit down, shut up, and look straight ahead as we fly off the cliff.
Management FAIL.
I am amazed that there is still integrity in the media, most stations, local and national, simply do not embrace the truth, they choose sides, democrat or republican, then shout out or do not report ALL of the news. Bravo for these two people, they are the professionals, they have left behind dirt.
ALL the alphabets (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC et al) in the tank for Obammy and the rest of the lieberals have shown these 2 the way.
I applaud these two for ‘falling on their swords.’ Local TV news is an embarrassment. The ‘witty’ anchor banter; having to wade through nineteen local car dealer and furniture store commercials before you’ll learn whether it will be sunny tomorrow; hyperventilating street reporters standing alongside highways during snowstorms telling you to ‘Stay Home;’ weather forecasts that are worse than ever, despite better-than-ever technology. The way these Local TeeVee news hacks make money is through the commercials they force you to watch. But not me: I happily disdain all local TV news and relish the misery their industry is in.
Oh, and a big ‘Thank You’ to YouTube for being there with an endless supply of ‘News Hacks being News Hacks’ videos.
LOL make money? I’m sorry, but you don’t “make money” when you work in local news. I make a couple of dollars above minimum wage. And we work hard. We don’t decide what commercials we air. We are just doing what we love. If you think it sucks, then don’t watch it.
Any management is always in our workforce. If you dont want to deal with it. No problem. Step aside. There are plenty of other people that would be happy to have your job. Especially in this weak economy. Alas, broadcasting in this area there are not many opportunities as you will soon find out.
Another example of a out of state office running as if they understand our market place. Some where there are investigative journalist’s out there as is the trend these days oh yea, everywhere except in Maine.
It is hard to run when your ankles are tied!
never bite the hand that has fed you
If your getting the back of that hand, bite it off.
Good Luck to you both..integrity goes a long way..and so rare these days..
Kudos to both of them for standing up for integrity in journalism.
Their actions may have been based on principle, but what they did was not honorable. I would not hire either of them for how they chose to handle the situation.
WVII wanted to be Maine’s version of Fox News. Well, unlike its national role model, it looks like Maine’s journalists have integrity. Bravo. Bravo.
Sounds like some bullying in the workplace.
Maybe FOX news is where they need to be. Fair and Balanced.
I will miss the two them. They were professional. As for their former manager, making the company bigger and prettier, put a pink dress on a pig and its still a pig.
now if most of ABC, CBS, and NBC would quit we might find out the truth about Fast & Furious and Benghazi
The truth has been out about Fast & Furious and Benghazi for quite some time. It just doesn’t sync with the paranoid delusions offered by right wing wacko media.
You can not be serious or that stupid.
Oh they are serious. It still was just a bunch of unorganized rebels that were upset about a movie (that no one ever saw btw) according to the far (out) left.
Hey that’s what Obama said!
He never, ever lies…
Sadly, there are many here like that.
The truth is the average man on the street knows very little about FF or Benghazi. If government malfeasance is less of a concern to you than the resulting political impact then you should reassess your priorities. It’s not about right or left, it’s about right or wrong.
Hopefully, if Obama admin hears about a bunch of UAE and Saudi men learning how to fly airplanes but not land them he will not ignore it.
There was nothing wrong with what happened in Benghazi. It’s you tea party hacks trying to make mountains out of nothing.
Oh you mean the “truth” about Obama shooting our ambassador there? Don’t you watch Fox News, that was on Fox News?
if the roles in your story were reversed, I would certainly watch Fox news…and crack a beer for the footage!!
Sicko comment.
What about that fake Moon landing?
Is that when Reagan sold missiles to Iran?
How about the Iran Contra affair. People have short memories.
I guess they weren’t lefty enough for the station. I’m glad to see that at least 2 journalists still have ethics.
More likely they were hounded by right-wing managers who wanted “fair and balanced” right-wing propaganda.
Instead of real news.
Yessah
it’s a right wing part of the state, care to bet on how the station wanted them to slant the news?
Integrity in a news team? Seems odd in this day and age. Congrats to these two for not allowing themselves to be pulled into the mire of biased news coverage. Now if only the anchors at CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX would follow suit…(there is no hope for MSNBC)….
Sometimes there is not a balance to an action, I’m tired of journalists trying to include false equivalencies to find balance.
Thank God there is no “journalists Union”.
If you don’t like the job, quit. A formula which should be followed everywhere.
“We’re mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.” *
* Network – 1 of the best movies ever made
Maybe these two can parlay this public resignation into credible new media news careers. Careers based on reality instead of the fantasies pushed by advertising sales driven media outlets. Good luck to you both.
Good for you! May other journalists follow your lead. It’s nice to know that there’s still some integrity out there.
“we were expected to do somewhat unbalanced news, politically, in general”
gee, I just can’t imagine
NESCOM students can apply…lol…because its the only channel nobody watches!
You’ve got to stand for something, or you’ll fall for anything. Congratulations Tony and Cindy. Even though integrity and ethics do not buy many groceries these days, they are still good food for the soul. It will be interesting to see who takes their place. I’ ll bet they tow the mark.
This is the problem with todays society. “Management”, they go to college to get that business management degree. They are not journalist. Journalist go to college to be come journalist.
Same as doctors, they go to Medical School and “management” tells them how to practice medicine. To make this work, management has to step back and let everyone do the job they were trained to do. We all know not everyone makes a good manager. There is no winner in the situation. You have two good journalitst out of a job, and complaining about bad management. Best of luck to both of these journalist.
Journal-lists are not taught, they are indoctrinated. To be a journalist you need to know the history of the nation you are reporting, the government of same, and have rational understanding of its laws. When I listen to “the news” I expect the anchor to know the difference between Hugo and Cesar Chavez. I don’t want anyone in an anchor position who was an appointed operative from either party. I wish all retired Flag ranked officers followed General Schwarzkopf’s example. If they are going to have a legal analyst with a stupid name, they should present an opposing view.
Like Sarah Palin?
Now this is rare..Someone whose conscience controls their lives rather than the reverse..
My Dad taught me a valuable lesson decades ago..’To thy own self be true’. Not always easy..but actually, a great comfort..
So the management of this station was dictating only favorable news of Obama and daily slam pieces on the GOP. No surprise.
the other way around, this is a FOX news station!!
If that’s the case, then good riddance to two more that apparently just wanted to lie daily for Barry Obama, and were offended they were not allowed to.
WVII is an ABC affiliate the other one is a Fox in a number of small markets (such as Bangor) the Fox stations carry news produced by another group.
2 more on unemployment
uh uh, they quit, no unemployment for them.
Besdides, they are white consrvatives, they would not get squat, anyway.
There’s no war on women, OR minorities, there is a aWar on WHITE Men.
And it’s time American admits it.
Obama’s Constituency survey hads NO option for white men.
Got that?
So, White Bread Crackers, what are YOU going to do about it?
And just because you are liberal, if you are a white male, u r screwed, too.
Welcome to the club.
They were on TV?
Pretty bush league stunt. Explains why they were stalled for so long in a forgotten corner of the woods
Way to go guys that takes some stones to do what I’m sure many would like to do to their owners and bosses who insist on foisting their politically twisted wrong leaning views on others. Good luck and many Thanksgiving day wishes to you and yours.
The fact that BOTH anchors resigned, rather than just one speaks volumes in my mind. Most unexpected changes happen for good reason. And, I see Tony and Cindy arriving into a much better professional environment. WVII is definitely one notch down now for its arrogance. Tony and Cindy will definitely be missed. I hope the BDN keeps tabs on their success for us.
If only Brian Williams, Diane Sawyer and the rest of the “media” had the same level of personal and professional honesty. Instead, they are Obama-loving hacks that have been completely exposed as untruthful. The TV “news” industry is dead. Who needs ’em, we’ve got the Internet now!!
Real journalism in America is dead. Local news is a cesspool of entertainment mixed with propaganda. I applaud these two.
“There was a constant disrespecting and belittling of staff …”Michaels said. I bet the other employees would say the same if not for fear of retaliation by a raging locomotive…
WOW ! A lot of rage up there in Bangor.
Anchors away or damn the torpedoes? We witness the wing nut world coming apart one nut at a time when principle trumps earnings,
Brave folks! Great Americans! This is what being an American is all about.
Brave folks wear uniforms and carry weapons! These are just two people who think they’re bigger than the people the work for and their customers! Not so much now, eh? Rah rah Fair and Balanced News!
I don’t know anything about this other than what’s in the article so it would be fatuous for me to weigh in on either side.
I don’t expect the station will have any difficulty finding someone capable of reading out loud in front of a camera for a six figure salary.
The “left”, the “right” as so many people continue to be polarized around is neither! They are in the end one and the same. These two quit their posts as journalists in a very public way. Perhaps if more game show hosts, a/k/a journalists had the slightest bit of integrity – whether identified as left or right – to do something similar, then more real news about what is REALLY GOING on in the world, the country would be more widely known to an American public continually duped by the lies that are “reported” as news and the division created by so many falsehoods, i.e. left/right
They can be replaced easily with cardboard cutouts. Talking heads spewing out dumbed down news.
bummer!
Good for you. You did the right thing.
The news long ago gave up just giving the facts and for a long time have created dumbed down stories that are easy to be spun politically because even the people creating the stories have no idea what they are talking about.
FoxNews, MSNBC, blatantly biased with dumbed down news for those who like to be spoon fed stories that will entertain their emotions. CNN, stories that tend to follow popular sentiment and often lack any real knowledge of the entire situation, for example, whenever they talk about financial matters. The only thing going for FoxNews is that they cover stories that aren’t covered by the other major networks, even when these stories should be at least mentioned.
But whatever, keep arguing about what side presents the most misleading facts and stories.
I respect these two. They at least have some integrity. The news has become disgraceful. They are nothing short of a dinner hour soap opera now. And 95% of the media is liberal based. News should be neither Democrat or Republican. They should simply REPORT the news. And worthwhile stories would be nice instead of the drivel they’ve been doling out to the masses for the last 10 years. I truly believe there is a conspiracy to keep the public stupid.
Hmm. If they quit because it’s too leftist I would sympathize.
Unfortunately they may not work again because people don’t want to be the next station they quit on air at.
Wherever they go they’ll find the same mindset pushing the “news”. It’s more about advertising. The news costs very little to produce. A whole newscast can be distilled down to 10-15 minutes, but by making the 5 o’clock news a 2 hour show they bank all that extra money. The newscasters make six figures, so these geniuses gave up their jobs for their misguided principles. Best wishes finding work they can feel good about. Isn’t Burger King hiring?
If they make six figures in Bangor, they must make seven in Portland! What a rip-off! Time to knock all these people down a peg so they understand the people they serve! Rah rah humility!
The tentacles of FIX Oozes apparently extended much farther than we realized. Prince Dakkar still lives in the spirit of these two brave sailors who just lopped off an arm of Architeuthis.
The Floggings will continue until Morale improves !
I applaud these anchors for standing up to political pressure regardless of which direction it’s coming from. Mainstream media has become a joke and it took some real integrity and cojones for these two to refuse to go along with their politically slanted agenda. Bravo! I hope they find much better jobs elsewhere.
It truly is refreshing and comforting to know that there are still people out there with honor and credibility…I thought those things were all but extinct. Thank you, Cindy and Tony for showing America that there are people left without an agenda.
You are so right. It is becoming very apparent that “real journalists are a dying breed”. Journalists should be unbiased and should report facts. This can only happen if all facts are reported without bias and omissions. I’m afraid that the new journalism will consists of pretty faces sitting at a desk in front of the cameras spewing the station owner’s leanings or worse, only what our government wants us to hear. That is scary!
Great example of information war fare AMBUSH tactics….!!!! There is way more to this story …!!!! Most news anchors would do the same if they did not depend on the PAYCHECK….! (bribe) We wonder how many viewers in Bangor understand the “ART OF WAR”..??
There is a difference between news and propaganda. Experience and skills are not required to read a script. The station will replace the real journalists with sheeple who will walk the prescribed line without any thought involved. They’ll have no problem finding imbecils like Chris Matthews.
Headline is inflammatory and should be removed unless either of them said Take This Job and Shove It
Hopefully we will see much more of this in the coming days, and months. The fact that the national news channels, and other channels as well, have become nothing more than the propaganda arm of the government should be appalling to every American.
With all due respect, i’ve been associated or in the news business for nearly 30 years. I wish I had a dollar for every owner/manager who claimed they were a raging locomotive of change. It may be change but it is rarely positive. More like churn or worse.
I have never heard/saw these people, as I am out of their viewership. I would think this act of on air resignation may make it harder for them to find work in their field of work. I believe all news is bias has made them unreliable and insignificant. Mainstream Media (Most newsprint and tv liberal) (Foxnews mostly conservative). It’s a full time job to weed out the facts from the 2.
Drudge, please remove the link to this story from your site! These two don’t deserve attention anywhere south of Waterville! No one cares! Rah rah relevance!
Thanks for telling me where all the dregs were coming from, I knew they weren’t from Maine but I can’t bring myself to go to Sludge except occasionally. I always feel like I’ve been in a sewer after visiting any of the nut job web sites like WND, Sludge, Fox Snooze, AMG NewMax……… well you get my drift.
ah, no wonder our little Maine newspaper’s comment section has gotten so trashy – it’s posted on Drudge.
That explains the influx of out of state hacks lately.
I’m going to flag them all from now on.
Chris Mathews is next I hope
Someone may have mentioned this already, but it put me in mind of the time Jack Paar opened the Tonight Show by saying “there’s got to be a better way to make a living than this” and left the stage and the show to a flummoxed Hugh Downs.
He came back some time later and said “well I was wrong”
Speaking of Jack Paar, I remember hearing the story about his station WMTW, when some programming hot shots from New York came up and advised getting rid of Marty Engstrom’s weather report from Mt. Washington. Little did they know that Marty was the only reason anyone watched Channel 8.
Slightly unbalanced means government controlled media spoonfeeding propaganda to the masses to sway public opinion.
No surprise you go to WVII website for a full newscast and the 6PM broadcast from yesterday is not there, but had no problem getting the 7am news from this morning posted.
I would say based on Palmers quotes and attitude towards this he doesn’t care at all. He is someone I wouldn’t work for and frankly it seems Tony and Cindy dealt with it for too long Tough decision but it was the right one and I am sure they won’t have a problem succeeding elsewheres
does someone have a link to the video of their big moment?
Yes:

I applaud the 2 for their integrity. I have seen the way the media has
shaped there views on the public for a while now.. I am thankful that
there are still people like them left in this day and age.
I am assuming that management was pushing for a more liberal-leaning, Obama loving news. Whichever way the push was, I give kudos to these two anchors for having the courage to do risk their careers to do this. There are very, very few news people these days who would do this.
I think you have that reversed. They are escaping the biased right wing news agenda being pushed.
First thing you know some of those left wing news people could get a pang of conscious ans start realizing the disservice they are doing to the country by being so biased in their communications. MSM is described simply as left good right bad.
In the good old days- there were journalists who actually did research. Now we have bubble headed bleach blondes reading the news. Good for them….I think.
So where’s the video?
You can watch it here:
http://t.co/SmluZatd
WVII has been a Mickey Mouse production for many years. Just look at the horrid graphics they use
Thank-you Barack Obama for shutting down more free speech. Anyone who reports the truth about Obama is targeted by the liberal media elites. It’s only happy times and good news for Obama —- otherwise, you’re fired!
Yeah, Obama personally did this too. And he personally used your tax dollars to buy Bo a toy and get himself a new Koran. Come on.
its a right wing part of the state-common sense would (should) tell you the station would want more a right wing slant to try to gain viewers
Really? Barack Obama did this? Wow! He’s every where isn’t he? Where have you been? This has been happening for the last 10 to 15 years. Haven’t you noticed? You can’t take any thing you read in newspapers or hear on the air for granted. Sheesh! You sound like my boss. He blamed Obama for the 2010 census.
Wonder what makes some stories like this one wind up with all sorts of out-of-state commenters….
The wacky world of the right knows no bounds. They honestly believe they are Omnipotent.
Real journalist refuse to destroy their credibility, honor and dignity because they have to read from the state run media script.
If they were truely concerned about being forced to perform biased reporting, then they made a real tough but right decision. It doesn’t matter which leaning they were being forced to support, real journalism doesn’t take sides, it just reports facts. Opinions are valid ONLY on editorial or commentary shows.
There are never just facts; it’s how they’re selected and presented that count.
I’m curious as to why they *really* quit. Vague reasons are no reasons at all.
I’d be curious to know the rest of the story. What political agenda is being pursued? After all, it is Maine.
You know they were forced to tow the dem line and like the rest of us people with common sense they are sick of it.
That is all
Apparently you don’t know what network this station is aligned with……
What’s the real story…where’s a journalist when you need one!
two respectable journalists but with no job. Because there is no job left for your ilk.
That is all
Two decent honest persons tired of the lies, distortion and ideology! I wish them luck, but with 95% of the media biased, by their own admission, extreme progressive left…I don’t hold out much hope for them in “media”.
Hmm..they saw all the phony numbers on global warming and didn’t want to be part of the hoax? They didn’t want to be part of the socialist propaganda they were probably told to spew? Good for them! I wish them the best for seeing garbage for what it is. We need more of MSNBC to keep us informed of all the racial stuff that is going on and how wonderful everything is.
You must remain true to your values…and in doing so you are shedding light on a very dark path…Congratulations on you bravery and your decision to leave the oppressive situation for something unknown, but definately better!
Well. If that wasn’t anticlimatic.
I salute them for their courage since integrity on any alphabet network including their former employer being an affiliate of ABC has long been missing, if it was ever there at all.
I know nothing of the politics involved but it was a good ‘gotcha’ moment for them. Everyone who reports or produces ‘news’ puts their own twist on things. It isn’t right but it is a fact of life. Believe only half of what you see and almost nothing you hear. ALL living creatures lie. It isn’t always a bad thing but this is true. All lie.
I’ll bet they weren’t told to lean to the right.
Wrong economy to be quitting jobs.
When they say they “were expected to do somewhat unbalanced news, politically, in general” for their ABC news program I don’t think we have to guess too hard as to what sort of politically unbalanced news (aka propaganda) they were expected to disseminate.
They should remain unemployed for quite some time, unless Foxnews hires them there are no other networks that appreciate fair and balanced reporting.
Priceless……for everything else…there’s Mastercard….
With all the government pressure on news program to be “on the right side” I’m surprised there are not more on air resignations. In this case I don’t know who was demanding more PC.
Probably one of the dumbest things they will ever do. I really hope they already had another job lined up because they just made finding a job for themselves very difficult.
What a shame. They were both so good in their positions there. This was not a decision made lightly by these two.
What’s wrong with your readers?? I saw the first few letters about this subject and then everything falls on the darn elections and voting..
News is inherently biased, always has been, always will be! These media companies are not primarily out to inform, they are out to make money. Selling the National Enquirer to the stupid masses is much easier than selling an encyclopedia. Dumb it down, scream loud, say it over and over! The only way to overcome this is to READ a large variety of sources, avoid any contemporary TV news, and question those who you trust most.
If they are a hard news program, balance shouldn’t be an issue except to report the story as factually available. No innuendo, no skewing the number of pro-con reports, no ad-lib rhetoric or talking points. Are they a news program, or an opinion program?
Time for so-called tv reporters and news readers to stop seeing themselves as stars and celebrities (local, or otherwise), or savers of the planet. Earn yourselves opinion programs, columns and blogs if that’s what you want to do.
Most of you won’t make it to the 7+ figure salaries of the gurus at the alphabet channels. At least, try to do it the honest way if you want to still be considered a
Journalist, instead of a “Journolist”.
