BANGOR, Maine — A Millinocket man arrested Wednesday night for allegedly beating his girlfriend with two handguns made his first court appearance Friday at the Penobscot Judicial Center.

Jonathan Grant, 35, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, a Class B crime, and assault, a Class D crime. He did not enter a plea Friday.

District Court Judge John B. Lucy set bail at $10,000 cash.

Millinocket police were called to a home on Katahdin Avenue about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for a report of disorderly conduct, according to court documents. When Detective Jon Glidden arrived, Grant was gone and reportedly had guns with him.

His 28-year-old girlfriend reported that Grant had hit her on the head with the butt of two different handguns, knocked her down and kicked her.

Alice Clifford, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County, told the judge Friday that the victim suffered contusions on her head, bruises on her hands and a broken rib.

The victim told police that her two children, ages 5 and 8 months, witnessed the attack. She said that Grant became angry when she returned from taking the older child to get ice cream and accused her of being with someone in a truck, according to court documents.

According to court documents, Glidden learned that Grant might have gone to a friend’s house on foot. Glidden and Sgt. Aaron Brooker went to the home and found Grant hiding in the basement.

Court documents did not say whether the guns were recovered.

Grant remained Friday night at the Penobscot County Jail unable to make bail.

If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000 on the aggravated assault charge alone.

His next court appearance is Jan. 14.

    1. Sorry, but that’s a terrible idea. This man is already violent, let’s not train him to be more so… Our honorable soldiers who are fighting for our country don’t deserve to stand beside scum like this.

      He belongs in jail.

  1. Tough guy with TWO guns beats up his girlfriend — and is later found by the cops hiding in a basement with no guns. Hmm, sounds like another case of bawls made by Smith and Wesson…

  2. Assault by beating this girl in front of these two little kids…..This man needs his guns taken away, needs to stay away from all women and children and should spend several nights in lock-up……plus much more that is better left unsaid for now…..

    1. right on!!! I don”t care who she was with, Frankenstein himself… it would be a huge improvement over him. He is one scary looking angry dude! man NOT

      1. I picture him being about 5’4″ and driving a huge pickup w/ every kentucky-go-faster from JC whitney. Over compensation

  3. most likely he is mad at himself for having No Job, no hope and no dreams Blame the failure that he is on someone else.

      1. he did, he was hiding in the basement, taking responsibility for protecting his sorry arce!! from the police!!!

      1. Don’t judge someone by who they are with. She’s a very pretty girl; with 3 beautiful children. She obviously got mixed up in a wrong situation and now that she’s gone through this, i’m sure she wont be going back to him.

  4. Real man. Beat her to the floor then kick her while she’s down. Good job Millinocket PD, it’s nice to see you get some positive press. Nick must be on vacation.

  5. this dipstick tried shooting himself once befor, (missed. dammit)why did he even have guns? the friend should also be charged for providing a place to hide. imo

  6. Good thing she was not one of my daughters. His incarceration would be considered “protective custody”. I would be waiting for him when he got out.

  7. Legal Input: Based on what I just read, the “guns” were not recovered (so where are they), is there proof that he was even there? Who made the decision that he was “hiding” in the basement of a friends house? Did the Police have a Warrant to search that house that he was in? The media does manipulate words to make a story sound better. From what I understand this guy treated her like a queen and bent over backwards for her and she took advantage of him. Anybody that knows him and/or her history, will agree with me 110%. So please know what the heck your talking about before you make any judgements. And at least say something that does not make you look uneducated.

      1. Is that what she said? I mean, has it been proven that it was a butt of two guns? Or is that what the Police put in their report because that is what she said? Unless there is legitimate proof that it was done by “The Butt Of Two Guns” I’m not going to believe any of it. Legally it is considered “HEARSAY” until legally proven. Not to mention Innocent Until Proven Guilty…….

    1. Once a woman beater, always a woman beater…and he’s beat more than one of his gf’s..he isn’t going to stop. He’s a piece of crap for laying his hands on ANY woman..but over seeing her in someone else’s truck…that is NO reason to beat someone..its pathetic.

  8. “No, no, no, don’t any of you understand? He’s really sweet at heart, and he loves me. Of course I won’t press charges.”

  9. I have a feeling the NRA isn’t going to be too happy with this fella.

They’ll likely offer to provide him with firearms training so he knows how to use them as they’re intended.

  10. The most intriguing part of this story is how a woman manages to have children only 3 months apart.

That was either one short pregnancy, or a heckuva long time in labor to deliver twins.

        1. they did kind of mess up the wording on that, but it’s obvious one is 5 years old and the other is 8 months old, as it is extremely rare to have children a few months apart, though it is possible.

          http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/woman-has-twins–two-months-apart-6152954.html

“One in every 50,000 women has a double uterus but doctors believe it is the first time a woman has become simultaneously pregnant then given birth twice within two months. Both were delivered by Caesarean section.”

  11. Could someone explain to me why, if there was going to be bail, that it wasn’t set at 10-20 million or something like that? Crossing my fingers that this woman and children will be safe. I think that when a judge sets a bail like this, the person in question should be forced to room at the ‘ol judges house for a while. After a few times of this in the state of Maine it wouldn’t be long for the law to actually take this stuff seriously.
