ROCKLAND, Maine — A man was rescued early Saturday morning from Rockland Harbor by firefighters after a bystander heard him yelling for help.
Officials said they didn’t know why Ryan Counce, 30, was in Rockland Harbor near the Arches Restaurant on Ocean Street at 5:24 a.m., when the call came in. Responders from the Rockland Fire Department commandeered a rowboat at the harbor and used it to help bring him in. The air temperature was about 10 degrees at the time of the rescue, according to Lt. Dennis Camber.
“It was a pretty cold day,” he said.
Officials also had called a rescue boat from the Thomaston Fire Department, but it wasn’t necessary, Camber said. The U.S. Coast Guard also was called to help but wasn’t involved in the rescue, he said.
Counce was transported to PenBay Medical Center in Rockport, where his condition was listed as “stable” at noon.
