BAR HARBOR, Maine — What was WMDI and then WBQI is now WBKA.
The radio station, which was a locally owned and operated oldies station in the 1990s and then as WBQI became part of the WBACH classical music network in 2001 is now owned by Blueberry Broadcasting. Nassau Broadcasting, which owned the WBACH stations, went bankrupt in 2011 and sold off its properties last year.
Bruce Biette, vice president and chief operating officer of Portland-based Blueberry Broadcasting, said Wednesday that the sale was completed on Dec. 7, 2012. He said that, as of Monday of this week, the station is now broadcasting the same programming as Big 104.7 in Bangor (WBAK) and WABK in the Augusta market. The stations play “the biggest hits” from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, he said.
WABK is broadcast at 104.3 on the FM dial and WBKA, the new call letters for the Bar Harbor radio station, broadcasts at 107.7.
Biette said no personnel changes are planned in conjunction with the acquisition of the Bar Harbor radio station.
With all the good music out there, why do people want to hear the same handful of songs over and over and over…….?
I really do miss WMDI. They were a noteworthy independent station which had a wide variety of formats, and truly LOCAL news as well.
