BREWER, Maine — A wood stove is being blamed for a fire that heavily damaged a home in Brewer on Thursday night.

Brewer Public Safety Director Perry Antone said firefighters were sent to 309 Eastern Ave. at 10:35 p.m. He said crews remained on scene until 6:30 a.m. Friday.

The one-story home had smoke and flames coming out of the roof when firefighters from Brewer and Holden arrived, according to Antone, but crews were able to get it under control within an hour despite temperatures well below zero.

A man who owns the home and his cat managed to get out safely, Antone said. No firefighters were injured in battling the blaze.

Antone said the fire was contained to the attic portion of the house, but the house sustained an estimated $30,000 in damage.

The public safety director said he is not sure if the homeowner was insured.
