BANGOR, Maine — A Dexter man indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury on sex charges involving a 3-year-old girl was arrested Thursday, according to the district attorney’s office.

Dustin Stevens, 25, was indicted Wednesday on one count each of gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact.

Bail was set at $5,000 cash, Michael Roberts, deputy district attorney for Penobscot County, said Thursday.

If Stevens does not make bail, he most likely will be arraigned before a judge Friday afternoon at the Penobscot Judicial Center, the prosecutor said.

Roberts declined to say what the relationship between Stevens and the victim was. The alleged conduct took place in October 2011 and was reported to the district attorney’s office by the Department of Health and Human Services, he said.

If convicted, Stevens could be sentenced to up to life in prison on the gross sexual assault charge, a Class A crime, Roberts said. The Dexter man also could be required to register as a sex offender for life.
