WASHBURN – Wendell F. Carman, 90, passed away March 10, 2013, to be with his loved ones. He was born May 31, 1922, on the Tabor Road, Washburn, son of Herman and Elizabeth (Russell) Carman

Wendell went to school on the Tabor Road and started at Washburn High School, but had to leave early to work with his father to help his mother pay the bills. He was a farm laborer for many years doing many jobs such as working in the potato house and driving truck. He then moved to Massachusetts where he did factory work at Nortons. In 1942, he moved back to Maine where he had an opportunity to be a flight mechanic for American Airlines. He was presented a medal for landing a one-wheeled plane at the Presque Isle airport safely and saving all the crew on board. He then went to work for Washburn High School driving school bus where he met and married Eunice Borden, Dec. 5, 1944. He worked as a mechanic for Taterstate and then McCain Frozen Foods where he retired. Wendell kept busy in retirement by building three houses and one camp.
Wendell is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eunice of Washburn; daughter, Pauline Eunice Vaughn and husband, Gerald L. III, of Stephenson, Va.; grandsons, Gerald IV and Andrew of Stephenson, Va., one great-granddaughter, Courtney Lynn Vaughn of Winchester, Va.; and brother, Herman Carman of Wade. In addition to his parents, Wendell was predeceased by sisters, Laura Herrick, Lottie Rupp, Maxine Carman and Adina Whitten; brothers, Wilber, Alden and Philip; and sisters-in-law, Della Carman and Velma Riteniour. He was also predeceased by his faithful companion, Kiesha.
A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 31, at Crouseville Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Blakney officiating. Donations may be made in Wendell’s memory to Washburn Pentecostal Church, P.O. Box 502, Washburn, ME 04786. Online condolences may be expressed at
