BANGOR, Maine — Saint Joseph’s College was able to foil a Husson Eagles suicide squeeze attempt in the bottom of the final inning when relief pitcher Corey McNamara made a magnificent diving catch and doubled-off the would-be tying run at third base for the final out of the game and a 3-2 victory Thursday for the Monks at the Winkin Complex.

St. Joe’s scored first, as sophomore catcher Joe Coyne drove in Alex Markakis with an RBI single in the top of the first inning.

The Monks (8-3) added another run in the fifth, when Mike Pratt drove in Sam Butts on a two-out double.

Husson (4-8) would get a run right back in the bottom of the inning, when Dylan Foster flared an RBI double to right field that pushed Cody McInnis across the plate.

Coyne would pick up another RBI for the Monks in the seventh, this time driving in Pratt on an RBI double of his own.

Husson clawed back within one in the eighth inning on a Josh Gaudette RBI single that scored Pat Thibodeau.

Senior righthander Jimmy Kennedy put together a strong start for the Monks, going 5 1/3 innings while giving up six hits and one earned run.

Corey McNamara earned the save for the Monks, dealing 1 1/3 innings of two-hit ball.

Sophomore Dennis O’Neil took the loss for the Eagles, going 7 2/3 innings while giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out four batters.

Colby 6, Fredonia State 5

AUBURNDALE, Fla. —- Colby College freshman Dan Csaplar earned the pitching win and lined a bases loaded two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Mules to a thrilling 6-5 win over Fredonia State on Thursday.

The Mules, who scheduled the game with Fredonia while down in Florida, moved to 6-1 overall heading into a doubleheader with Thomas College on Friday at noon.

Csaplar was hitting with two outs and had two strikes before getting a hit to right field to score Nathan Ellis and Jason Buco with the runs. Ellis had a lead-off pinch-hit double and Buco reached on an infield hit. Luke Duncklee sacrificed the runners over one base and Tim Corey was walked intentionally to load the bases.

Buco, Corey, and Csaplar each had two hits for the Mules, who had a 13-8 advantage in batting.

Buco led off the fourth inning with a walk, stole second, and came around to score on Duncklee’s single. Csaplar had the first of his three RBI on the day when he drove in Corey, who had led off the third inning with a double. Colby’s John Schroeder singled in the second inning, stole second, and scored on a single by first-year Tyler Starks. Colby’s other run came in the first after Buco led off with a triple and later scored on a Corey single.

First-year Glenn Parsons threw the ball well for Colby, allowing no earned runs while striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.

Softball

Colby splits twinbill

CLERMONT, Fla. —- Colby College first-year shortstop Emily Schatz had an RBI single to drive in Meaghan Lewia from third base to give the Mules a 7-6 victory over Carroll in non-conference softball on Thursday.

The Mules, now 4-4 overall on their spring trip to Florida, fell 7-1 to Loras College in a game earlier Thursday.

International rules were used to start the eighth inning, putting a runner at second base to start the frame. Lewia was put on second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Carylanne Wolfington. Schatz followed with her big hit to go 5-for-5 on the day.

Lindsay Peterson went 3-for-3 and Lewia went 3-for-4 for the Mules in the win against Carroll. Lewia scored twice and drove in a run, while Peterson had one run. Wolfington had two hits, two RBI, and scored one run. Carolyn Bennett scored twice, Eric Pulford had one hit and scored one run, and Brianne Wheeler drove in a run and had one hit.

Megan Michie came on in relief in the third inning and went the rest of the way to earn the victory.

In the first game against Loras, Schatz went 2-for-3 and scored the lone run. Lewia also had two hits, while Pulford smacked an RBI single.

Women’s Lacrosse

Thomas 16, Regis 12

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Thomas women’s lacrosse team was able to withstand a couple of second-half rallies from Regis and pull out a 16-12 victory over the Pride Thursday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

The Terriers started the game with five unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of action to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. The run of goals saw four Thomas players get involved in the scoring, led by junior Miranda Tinsman’s two goals. The Pride would get on the board at the 20:56 mark on a goal scored by junior Lindsey Graver. Both teams would go back and forth trading goals up until the final 20 seconds of the first half, when freshman Erin Nelligan would net back to back goals to put Thomas up 10-5 at the break.

The second half scoring got started when sophomore Jennifer Day would score the first of her three second-half goals as she took a pass from senior Ceara DiBiase and got it past Pride goalie Emma Decker for the goal.

With the score now 12-6 Thomas, Regis would score four unanswered goals to pull within two at 12-10, two of which were scored by sophomore Sashae Walls. The Terriers came out after a timeout with 13:13 remaining with some urgency as they would connect on three goals over the next seven minutes to extend the lead back up to 15-10.

Regis would respond and cut the deficit to three with 4:57 remaining, but some strong Terrier defense would keep them scoreless the remainder of the way. Day would put it away with a late goal to finish with game-high five goals.

For Thomas, Tinsman finished with four goals and one assist, Nelligan had three goals and seven groundballs. Brittany Premo posted two goals, two assists, and five groundballs, and Ceara DiBiase and Jillian Lambert each scored goals for the Terriers.

Thomas improves to 5-3.
