BERWICK, Maine — A woman is dead and a teenage male injured following a head-on collision Wednesday morning in York County.

The 34-year old woman, whose name Berwick police Capt. Jerry Locke did not disclose, was pronounced dead at the scene on Route 4.

A car driven by a 17-year-old male from Biddeford was headed south on Route 4 and apparently crossed into the northbound lane, Locke said. While one northbound car avoided the teenager’s vehicle, the juvenile struck the second car head-on, the captain said.

The teen was transported to Wentworth Hospital in Dover, N.H. for evaluation while two passengers in the deceased woman’s vehicle, two children ages 7 and 4, were transported to the same hospital. One of the children later was flown to an undisclosed Boston hospital for further treatment, according to Locke.

Route 4 was closed for six hours while police cleaned up the scene, Locke said. Blood samples were taken from both drivers, and the crash remains under investigation.
