BANGOR, Maine — A local transient was charged with possession of marijuana and warned not to drink in public Wednesday after being spotted with a can of beer in Pickering Square, police said.

Bangor police Officer David Farrar was patrolling the area around 5 p.m. when he observed Timothy Helman-Dollar, 25, carrying a 40-ounce can of beer, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

Prior to Farrar questioning Helman-Dollar, the suspect was observed consuming the contents of the beer, which the officer told him to dump out, Edwards said. Helman-Dollar complied with Farrar’s order.

Helman-Dollar was issued a summons for possession of marijuana, as he had what Edwards described as a marijuana cigarette in his hand upon being questioned by Farrar. He also was given a criminal trespass warning not to return to Pickering Square.

“This is the kind of behavior downtown we’re trying to solve,” said Edwards, referring to public drinking.
