WARREN, Maine — The town planning board gave final approval last week to a proposed indoor sports facility.
The planning board gave approval to WSF LLC’s application to construct a 68,850-square-foot building on the west side of Route 90 about two miles from the Rockland town line.
The facility will be built to provide indoor facilities for local schools for their sports team. The project will still need the approval of the state fire marshal, Warren Code Enforcement Officer Stan Waltz said Monday.
The facility will be available for teams including soccer, field hockey and baseball teams to practice, Waltz said. Teams have to travel two hours currently to find an indoor practice facility, he said.
Multiple teams will be able to practice at the same time.
An outdoor sports field may be constructed on the property at a later time, the code officer said.
The projected cost of the indoor sports facility is $2.5 million. The building will be one story, except for a portion in the front, which will have a second floor for offices and concessions.
WSF’s Rick Bresnahan has been a local philanthropist. He founded Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport in 2001. That facility was donated in 2010 to a nonprofit that features indoor skating and tennis.
The new facility, named The Pitch, is to be located at 721 Camden Road (also known as Route 90) on a more than 28-acre property. It would be built within a year of town approval.
