CARIBOU – Donald F. Smith, 86, died June 8, 2013, in Caribou. He was born Aug. 7, 1926, in Caribou, son of the late Freeland and Annie (McGlinn) Smith.
At the age of 15, Don graduated with the class of 1942 from Caribou High School. He married Glenda Hewitt, Nov. 10, 1948. Mr. Smith was a self-employed dairy farmer and potato grower, having farmed on the Sweden Road in Caribou for many years. He was a lifetime member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and made his Cursillo in April 1979. Don loved playing violin and harmonica. He was an avid gardener and grew beautiful gladiolas, which he truly enjoyed sharing with family, friends and neighbors.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of more than 64 years, Glenda of Caribou, is two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Patty Smith of Woodland and Donald and Hollis Smith Jr. of Monmouth; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Tom Hale of Westmanland; daughter-in-law, Barbara Smith of Woodland; son-in-law, Bob Brown of Searsport; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith was predeceased by son, Darrell; and daughter, Carla Brown.
Friends may visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Monday, at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, at Parish of the Precious Blood, Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Interment will be at Old Holy Rosary Cemetery. After the service all are invited to a time of continued fellowship and refreshments with the family at the parish center.
