SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. – Scott E. Myers, 69, beloved husband, father, friend and educator, died June 5, 2013, in Sun City Center, Fla., after a brief, unexpected illness. He was born Feb. 17, 1944, in Millinocket, to the late Frank and Eloise Myers.
Scott attended Old Town schools, where his mother was a history teacher, and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine, Orono, where his father was a Professor of Education. He earned a master’s degree in education and certificate of advanced graduate study from the University of Connecticut. Scott’s vocation was educating children, empowering teachers and leading schools. In his 40-year career, he was a teacher, elementary school principal, school district superintendent, and inspiration to all. His first principalship was at Fairview School, Auburn, where he was known for his fairness, dedication to learning, and compassion. He focused on encouraging the development of innovative programs and fostering school community partnerships. Scott was president of the president of the Maine Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, MASCD, and superintendent of schools in SAD 39, Buckfield. In 1991 Scott moved to Tampa, Fla., with his wife Eileen Myers and was principal of Knights and Lithia Springs elementary schools. Foremost, Scott was always a teacher, whether of children, parents or colleagues. Career aside, Scott was a vibrant and intellectual man and soulmate of Eileen, his wife of 25 years. He had grandchildren he adored, lifelong friendships he treasured, and varied interests. He was a voracious reader who lived vicariously through adventure novels such as climbing Mount Everest, diving dangerous shipwrecks, and solving mysteries. He also loved his own real-life travels, such as touring Italy, England, Alaska, California wine country, and biennial sailing trips to the British Virgin Islands with their friends, the Selwoods. Spending summers in Maine was the essence of his retirement. He was a wine connoisseur, enjoyed unique restaurants and cultural events and had become an avid golfer. Above all, Scott was a lifelong learner. His latest frontier was technology. He adored Apple products and all things digital, and was eagerly awaiting the next new thing.
Scott is survived by his wife, Eileen Myers of Sun City Center, Fla.; sister, Brenda Myers of Bangor; daughter, Jody Myers of Morristown, N.J.; and son, Darren Myers and wife, Melissa, and children, Calvin, Carson and Cashton all of La Crosse, Wis.
