AUGUSTA, Maine — A local physician assistant and his supervising doctor were reprimanded last week by the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine, according to a press release from the board.

Nelson Meaker, a physician assistant who works in Orono, and his supervisor Dr. Thomas Hayward, whose office is in Corinth, accepted their reprimands on June 19, according to the release.

The board received information that Meaker had been using blank prescriptions, which Hayward had pre-signed, to prescribe controlled substances.

Meaker signed a consent agreement stating that he is restricted from prescribing schedule II medications, which are narcotics, and must complete board-approved courses on prescribing controlled substances within six months.

Hayward’s punishment indicates he may not act as a supervising physician for more than one assistant at any time, according to the release.
