CALAIS, Maine — One person is dead and three more are wounded after a shooting in Calais on Wednesday evening, according to Maine Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

More information will be released by 10:30 p.m., he said in a statement.

Maine State Police are at a Main Street residence where several gunshots were heard Wednesday evening, according to someone nearby.

Calais Motor Inn employee Jennifer Nott said she heard four gunshots across the street from the motel between 5 and 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“I heard four gunshots and chaos broke loose,” she said.

Maine State Police’s Major Crimes Unit is at the scene and the home is blocked off with police tape, she said. The Washington County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Border Patrol and Baileyville police also went to the home.

A LifeFlight helicopter left the scene a little before 9 p.m., she added.
