ALTON, Maine — A Waterville man escaped with bumps and bruises from a car collision with a moose on Interstate 95 on Friday night, state police said.
Nathaniel Thomas, 18, was heading south in a 1999 Saab sedan when the collision occurred about a half mile south of mile marker 202 at about 10:15 p.m., said state police Trooper Michael Johnston of the Orono barracks.
The car went off the road about 50 yards into thick brush in the median just south of a small bridge. The moose was killed instantly.
Johnston said he couldn’t immediately tell why Thomas was spared severe injury.
“It might have been a glancing blow rather than a full head-on collision,” Johnston said Friday.
Several passers-by called 911 and helped Thomas from the car, Johnston said. An Old Town Fire Department ambulance took Thomas to Eastern Maine Medical Center for evaluation as a precautionary measure. No charges will be filed.
