PORTLAND, Maine — This winter, it will be easier for Mainers to fly south to the Sunshine State.

Portland International Jetport announced Monday that Southwest Airlines is adding a nonstop flight from Portland to Orlando on Saturdays, starting March 8, 2014.

“It’s great news. It will be our 13th nonstop destination out of Portland,” said Scott Carr, deputy airport director for the jetport.

After Washington, D.C., and New York, Orlando is the third busiest destination for the airport, Carr said.

In April 2012, the jetport stopped its nonstop flight to Orlando on AirTran when the airline merged with Southwest. Since then, passengers have had to connect in Baltimore to get to Orlando.

“This complements our three daily nonstop flights to Baltimore,” said Carr.
