Some facilities are open and some services are available during the federal government shutdown:

FEDERAL SERVICES

Open

U.S. Postal Service: Mail will be delivered.

Passport offices: Open, but may be closed if located in a government building affected by the shutdown.

Public schools: Open, but Education Department has stopped most of its operations.

Federal courts: Could operate with reserve funds.

Federal prisons: Federal prisons are staffed.

Food inspectors: Most USDA inspectors of meat and poultry are working. However, FDA inspectors of seafood and dairy products are not working.

Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid: Benefits are being paid, but new applications may not be processed untiil the government reopens.

Immigration services: Businesses are not able to check the legal immigration status of prospective employees.

SNAP: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits continue in October.

Airports: Air travel continues. Air traffic controllers and baggage screeners are considered essential.

Patent and Trademark Office: The Department of Commerce is maintaining patent and trademark application processing.

Military: Certain members of the U.S. military will be paid during the shutdown.

Closed

Veterans disability claims: VA facilities are open but benefit programs overseen by te VA will probably be affected.

Internal Revenue Service: Tax filers facing an Oct. 15 deadline will find IRS phone lines dead.

WIC program: The program that provides food to low-income women and children will be out of funds.

Federal websites: Many government websites will be down or have limited functionality.

Unsure

Government contractors: May be affected if they work in a federal building or need federal worker assistance, or if they need additional funding to continue.

TOURISM

Open

Amtrak: Amtrak officials say trains continue to run.

Kennedy Center: Will continue its non-appropriated functions and honor all non-appropriated fund contracts.

Paid museums: Private museums remain open.

Closed

National parks: All national park facilities and grounds are closed.

National Zoo: The zoo is closed and none of the live-animal cameras will be broadcast.

U.S. Capitol: Public tours are suspended.

Free museums: The Smithsonian and Holocaust museums are closed.

National Archives: All operations are funded by annual appropriations are suspended.
