Jason Garrett is apparently not coaching for his job Sunday when the Dallas Cowboys host the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC East championship and a spot in the 2013 playoffs.

Garrett, owner Jerry Jones said on his weekly radio show, is the right man for the job.

“His future is bright through my eyes with the Dallas Cowboys,” Jones said on 105.3 FM.

Garrett needs a victory to avoid a third straight 8-8 season.

The team last appeared in the postseason in 2009, beating the Eagles in the wild-card round before a 34-3 whitewash against Brett Favre and Minnesota Vikings.

Last season, the Cowboys lost their final two games to cough up the division and a postseason spot. Dallas is 1-4 in their past five December games.

Quarterback Tony Romo is undergoing treatment for a back injury and reportedly is dealing with a herniated disc. Jones repeated what he said late Monday, telling the radio station Romo’s high pain tolerance makes him a candidate to play if the medical staff gives clearance.

Peters needs Achilles’ surgery

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Corey Peters will require surgery to repair an Achilles’ injury, coach Mike Smith announced Tuesday.

Peters suffered the season-ending injury on Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers. Peters played 10 snaps and recorded a sack before being helped off the field.

Smith said Peters will undergo surgery and faces a six-to-eight month recovery process. It was a noncontact injury.

The Falcons will also placed safety Zeke Motta on injured reserve this week. Motta, who injured his neck in practice last week, underwent surgery on Sunday.

“The recovery time, from what I understand, is a good four to six weeks,” Smith said. “And he should be good to go.”

Redskins place Barnett on IR

The Washington Redskins placed linebacker Nick Barnett on injured reserve and promoted linebacker Will Compton to the active roster from their practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

The Redskins also signed free agent linebacker Adrian Robinson to their active roster and signed free agent tight end Gabe Miller to the practice squad.

Barnett (6-2, 228) appeared in 14 games this year in his 11th NFL season. He tore the MCL in his left knee while playing on the kick-return unit early in the first quarter against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Compton (6-2, 230) originally signed with the Redskins as a college free agent on May 2. He was waived on Aug. 31 before signing to the team’s practice squad on Sept. 1. Compton played collegiately at Nebraska, where he appeared in 50 games with 37 starts.

Robinson (6-1, 250) originally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a college free agent on April 30, 2012. He was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 23 this season before being waived on Aug. 30. He was acquired off waivers by the Denver Broncos on Sept. 1 and was waived on Oct. 15. He signed with the San Diego Chargers on Nov. 12 and was released on Dec. 7.

Miller (6-3, 257) was originally drafted as a linebacker by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He was released by the Chiefs on Aug. 31, 2012 and had brief practice squad stints with the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears before spending the 2013 offseason with the Bears. He was released by the Bears on Aug. 25.

Colt place Hughes on IR

The Indianapolis Colts placed defensive tackle Montori Hughes on injured reserve and signed linebacker Alan Baxter to the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Hughes was selected by the Colts in the fifth round (139th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He appeared in four games this season, making seven tackles, including four solo stops.

Baxter (6-0, 238) was originally signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent on April 27. He was then signed to the Steelers’ practice squad on Sept. 1 and released on Oct. 11. Baxter played in 52 career games at Northern Illinois.
