ELLSWORTH, Maine — Firefighters were on the scene of a fire at the Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Birdsacre, on Sunday evening.
A building fire was reported at the sanctuary’s property at 289 High St. at about 6:14 p.m.
Firefighters were still on the scene, an Ellsworth Police dispatcher reported shortly before 8 p.m.
Firefighters from Ellsworth, Trenton, Hancock and Lamoine responded to the scene.
The sanctuary, which provides refuge for injured birds, consists of 200 acres and includes a museum, nature center and trails.
It is named for Cordelia J. Stanwood, a respected naturalist, ornithologist, photographer and writer of the early to mid-20th century.
The sanctuary marked its 50th anniversary in 2009.
