Easter Cantata

School open house
BANGOR — Bangor Christian Schools has scheduled an open house for students entering grades pre-kindergarten through grade 5 for the 2014-15 school year. The open house will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m., April 11, in the foyer of Bangor Baptist Church.
Visiting students and parents can observe the Bible-based elementary program and participate in various classroom activities. Also included will be the weekly chapel services for the primary and upper elementary classes. Headmaster Jim Frost and Principal Martha Boone will host a reception at 11 a.m. in the Children’s Center for all visiting students and parents.

Basic accreditation
BANGOR — The Congregation Beth El of Bangor Library was recently awarded “basic accreditation” by the Association of Jewish Libraries.
In its announcement letter, the ACJ state that the Beth El librarian, Riva Berleant, PhD, is credited with, “…an outstanding job, achieving the highest standards of excellence in librarianship.”
The letter states, “Eligibility for accreditation was determined after a thorough review of the documentation and application submitted by Riva, showing that the Library and its staff adhere to the professional standards promoted by the Association of Jewish Libraries.”
The accreditation award is to be presented at the annual conference of the Association of Jewish Libraries in Las Vegas, Nevada, June 22-25, 2014.

Library grant
CARMEL — The Simpson Memorial Library has received a $350 grant from the Rose and Samuel Rudman Library Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.
The grant will help support a seven-week summer read program for children and adults. The cost for such programs has increased over the years; the grant will cover the cost of hiring a guest speaker and purchasing books for the program.
This year’s summer read theme is “Fizz, Boom, Read.” Reading during the summer helps maintain a child’s reading level and can be a fun activity for the whole family.

Musical variety show
BANGOR — Cornell Mac and Bangor Grange will present a musical variety show at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at Bangor Grange Hall, 1192 Ohio St. The show will be preceded by a grange baked beans, casseroles, and hot dogs supper at 5:30 p.m. Supper tickets are $7; show tickets, $8, or both for $13. AMVETS nomination
OLD TOWN —
AMVETS Post 9 will have First Nomination of Officers for 2014-15 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at Old Town American Legion Hall on Water Street. Members are encouraged to attend.

Hike for the Homeless
BANGOR — The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter will be hold its annual Hike for the Homeless on April 12. The four starting locations are Bangor High School (Bangor), Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems (Brewer), Hampden Academy (Hampden), and The Sports Arena (Hermon).
While donations are not required to participate in the hike, participants are encouraged to seek pledges. Participants also have the ability to buy raffle tickets for some great prizes. These prizes will be drawn once all parties convene on the Bangor Waterfront.

Teen Parent Education
BANGOR — The Good Samaritan Agency has received a $9,000 grant from the TJX Foundation and a $500 grant from Realty of Maine to support the agency’s Teen Parent Education program, which is an individualized, alternative education program through which pregnant and parenting teenagers can earn their high school diplomas.
Students take traditional high school courses, as well as classes that emphasize parenting skills and other practical life skills that help them to become more self-sufficient. Students come to the program from throughout the Bangor area. Curriculum oversight is provided by the Bangor Adult Education Program.
The program depends on tuition from sending schools and the Bangor School Department, as well as funding through United Way grants. In the last three years, 87 percent of the TPE graduates have gone on to either a four-year college or technical school or have become employed.

Faculty awards
ORONO — Three University of Maine faculty members — Kate Beard-Tisdale, Susan Brawley and Mary Tyler — are the recipients of ADVANCE Career Recognition Awards by UMaine’s Rising Tide Center.
Beard-Tisdale is a member of the School of Computing and Information Science; Brawley is in the School of Marine Science; and Tyler is in the School of Biology and Ecology.
The Career Recognition Awards highlight the significant accomplishments of women faculty at UMaine through their teaching, research, constituent service and campus leadership. Sharing the professional successes of UMaine faculty raises the profile of women scientists and is intended to inspire colleagues at every rank.
The award winners will give lectures about their research and will lead a panel discussion. Beard-Tisdale will speak on, “A Passage in Space and Time,” noon, April 10, Coe Room, Union.
Brawley will speak on, “Small Is Beautiful: Marine Eggs, Spores and Bacteria,” 2 p.m., April 16, Wells Conference Center, followed by the awards ceremony and reception.
