BREWER, Maine — A man driving a green pickup truck on Interstate 395 Friday afternoon apparently choked after taking a drink of his coffee, which caused him to crash, Maine State Police Trooper Taylor Dube said at the scene.

The driver, who was not identified, was shaken from the crash but was talking and responsive when the ambulance took him to Eastern Maine Medical Center, the trooper said.

A washer and dryer that were strapped into the back of the GMC Sierra pickup truck fell out when it crashed into the ledge along the highway in the eastbound lane at around 3:40 p.m. The dryer went one way and the washer went the other, Dube said. Other drivers did not hit the appliances, he said.

Trooper Trevor Snow could be seen pulling the two damaged white laundry appliances off to the right side of the highway. Bouchard and Son Towing of Hampden arrived to remove the vehicle and machines.
