RUMFORD, Maine — Police are searching for a man considered armed and dangerous who was involved in an assault Monday night.

Randall Chapman, 37, of Rumford had apparently assaulted and robbed another man in his hometown before the victim was ordered into his truck at knifepoint and told to drive to an ATM machine, according to Rumford Police Chief Stacy Carter.

Carter said the victim’s wallet and money had been taken from him.

En route to an ATM, the victim spotted police cruisers from Mexico and Rumford in the parking lot of the Labonville store in Mexico, according to Carter, and pulled in, honked his horn and yelled for help.

“Mr. Chapman had a knife there, slashed the victim in the face with the knife, jumped out of the vehicle and fled towards the [Androscoggin] River,” said Carter.

Rumford police were radioed by their Mexico counterparts to assist, Carter said, but Chapman was not located, Carter said. Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputies and state police assisted Rumford, Mexico and Dixfield officers.

“We consider him to be armed and dangerous,” Carter said of Chapman.

Chapman remains on the loose as of Tuesday afternoon, and Carter is warning anyone who sees him not to approach him but call 911 or Rumford police at 364-4551.

Chapman stands 5 feet, 6 inches tall, has short blonde hair and blue eyes. He weighs 140 pounds.
