MONMOUTH, Maine — A local man was killed Wednesday morning in a work accident on Howard Drive, according to police.

Philip Coward, 30, was crushed to death by a rebar that fell off a forklift, according to Monmouth police Officer Richard Alexander.

Alexander said a company owned by Coward’s father was having a load of rebar delivered to the Howard Drive residence when a malfunction with the forklift caused the load to slip and land on Coward.

The accident happened around 10:45 a.m., the officer said.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration is investigating the incident, although Alexander doesn’t believe it will be considered suspicious.

Coward was pronounced dead at the scene.
