BIG MOOSE TOWNSHIP, Maine — Two people were sent to the hospital Saturday morning after a head-on collision on Route 15 in which the driver of one vehicle had veered to avoid a moose, sheriff’s deputies said.
Mark Mcennis was headed north at 8:14 a.m. when the moose darted out of the woods, causing him to swerve into the southbound lane to avoid striking the animal, according to Sgt. Mike Gould of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office.
Mcennis’ pickup subsequently struck a Jeep driven by Torri-Anne Stone of Florida, according to Gould.
The moose was not hit by either vehicle, the sergeant said.
The accident totaled both vehicles, Gould said. Mcennis suffered injuries not considered life threatening and was transported to C.A. Dean Hospital in Greenville. Stone was transported to the same hospital with minor injuries.
