ROCKLAND, Maine — A 47-year-old Bath man will serve four months in jail starting Dec. 1 after admitting to stealing nearly $20,000 in state aid.

Trevor Lamoreau was sentenced Tuesday in Knox County Superior Court to two years in jail with all but four months suspended for theft by deception. Justice Andrew Horton also placed Lamoreau on probation for two years.

The sentence was agreed upon between defense attorney Eric “Rick” Morse and Assistant Attorney General Darcy Mitchell. The only disagreement was on the amount of restitution that Lamoreau had to repay.

Mitchell asked that the defendant repay $19,813 to the state. Lamoreau was convicted of obtaining food stamps and temporary aid for needy families by lying about having two children as dependents to qualify for the benefits.

Morse asked for less restitution, pointing out that his client lives with his mother, has no property or vehicle, and earns between $10,000 and $15,000 annually by delivering bait by truck. In addition, the defense attorney said his client has numerous health problems that will make it difficult to make full restitution.

Justice Horton ordered Lamoreau to repay $2,500, citing the man’s financial situation.
