A garage in Caribou was destroyed on Saturday afternoon after a fire swept through the property on 393 Belanger Road.
Capt. Mike McCarthy of the Caribou Fire Department said Saturday that firefighters were called to that address just after 11:48 a.m.
“The garage was fully involved when we arrived,” McCarthy said.
He said the property owner, Leo St. Peter, was mowing his lawn when he noticed that the building was on fire.
The structure had at least three doors, but it also had an addition in which St. Peter had several classic cars, the captain said.
St. Peter was able to move two cars out of the building before the fire got too involved.
“The fire was pretty close to the home,” McCarthy said, “but we were able to protect the home as best we could. The home did [have] some heat damage as far as melted siding.”
Firefighters were there for more than 2 1/2 hours and they received mutual aid from the Presque Isle and Limestone fire departments.
McCarthy said there was no known cause of the fire and it was not considered suspicious. He said the building was insured.
