Steuben’s Brenton Parritt captured the Late Model points championship at Hermon’s Speedway 95 with seven wins and a top five finish in all but one race this season.
The 39-year-old driver would now like to add a $2,000 check to his bank account when a 150-lap feature is held on Saturday at Speedway 95 as the track’s season concludes with two days of races on Cap’s Tavern and Judy’s Restaurant Veterans Appreciation weekend.
The fourth annual 100-lap Ikey Dorr Memorial Race for Street Stocks/Outlaws/Wildcat cars will be held on Sunday, with the winner pocketing $3,000.
The green flag will drop at 2 p.m. on both days and there also will be several other classes of racing.
Veterans will be admitted to the grandstands for half price and disabled vets will get in free.
“This has been one of my better years,” said Parritt, who drives a Chevy Impala and has Eric Tatro serving as his crew chief.
It is Parritt’s fifth points championship in a variety of classes.
The Late Model features have been 40 laps, so a 150-lapper will be a different type of race for most of the drivers. It also pays a lot more, as a weekly feature win earns the victor $700.
“I think the longest race I’ve ever run has been 100 laps,” said Parritt. “You’re going to have to be patient. You want to make sure you don’t wreck and that you’re there at the end.”
He feels there are “five or six guys who could easily win the race,” including fellow Steuben driver Rowland Robinson Jr.
“Rowland drove on the ACT [American-Canadian Tour] this year so he’s used to the longer races,” pointed out Parritt.
Robinson finished ninth in the ACT points and had four top-10 finishes in nine races.
Parritt said his brother, Wayne, is another top contender.
Harrington’s Andrew McLaughlin and Hemon’s Mike Hopkins were also listed as primary contenders by Parritt, who noted that because of the payouts, the race will attract drivers from other tracks as well.
It’s the same for the Ikey Dorr Memorial race.
Last year’s winner was Maurice Young from Windsor and Kim Baker Allen, the head scorer and office manager at Speedway 95, said she expects him to return to defend his title.
Harrington’s Alex Berry won the Street Stock class and will be among the favorites, as will Hermon’s Jordan Pearson.
Cornville’s Shelby and Matt Kimball should also be in the mix. Shelby Kimball won the Strictly Street points title in 2013 with younger brother Matt winding up second.
The race commemorates Dorr, an Addison native who suffered a heart attack and died while racing at Speedway 95 on June 6, 2009.
