BANGOR, Maine — The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is seeking a new bankruptcy judge to replace Louis H. Kornreich, who will retire next year.

Kornreich, 64, of Bangor, has held the position since April 2001. He filled the vacancy in Bangor left when U.S. Bankruptcy Judge James B. Haines Jr. transferred to the Portland court.

The vacancy was announced Monday.

The courts of appeals, assisted by the circuit councils, have the duty of filling vacancies on the bankruptcy court in each circuit, according to information posted on the 1st Circuit’s website. A selection panel will recommend to the council individuals whose character, experience and commitment to equal justice under the law fully qualify them to serve as bankruptcy judges.

The final selection will be made by the appellate court in Boston. Applications must be postmarked by Nov. 14.

The term of office for bankruptcy judges is 14 years. The current salary is $183,172.

Members of the selection panel are: Circuit Judges William J. Kayatta Jr. and Kermit V. Lipez; U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen; attorneys George Kurr Jr. of Bangor and Darcie Beaudin of Auburn; and Alec Leddy, clerk of U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Maine.

Kornreich was selected from a field of 18 applicants. He was one of three finalists interviewed for the job.
