Doll Show and Sale

BANGOR — The Maine-ly Dolls Club will hold its Doll Show and Sale 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Bangor Elks Club, 108 Odlin Road. Antique, vintage, and collectible dolls and miniatures, doll clothes, and accessories will be available.

The Maine-ly Dolls Club is a member of the United Federation of Doll Clubs and was founded in 1985 as a social and educational group to share, promote and provide doll-related activities. For information, call 234-4101, or email countrycottage11@aol.com.

Genealogy workshop

BANGOR — A Beginner Genealogy Workshop, a free event presented by Mary Banfield and Sandra Burke and sponsored by Penobscot County Genealogical Society will be held 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Bangor Family History Center, 639 Grandview Ave. The workshop is open to all. Fall Clean Up Day

BANGOR —  Bring rakes, gloves and love for downtown Bangor to Norumbega Park at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, to help the Downtown Bangor Partnership give downtown its quarterly makeover. From hanging the winter lights to cleaning up trash and debris throughout downtown, there is something for volunteers, of all ages, to dig into. Help out all day or for just a few hours.

Support for lighting up trees in downtown Bangor is provided by Katahdin Trust Company. This year, because of the company’s generosity, the Downtown Bangor Partnership will expand the lighting efforts to include several trees along Main Street. Bangor Lowe’s Home Improvement provided a discount on the materials, organizers said.

Snacks and beverages will be provided for everyone lending a hand. Rain date is Sunday, Oct. 19.

Speaker from El Salvador

BANGOR — The U.S. El Salvador Sister Cities Speaking Tour will bring Edith Portillo, community organizer and board member of the Association for the Development of El Salvador to Bangor 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor, 120 Park St. Portillo will discuss how U.S. foreign policy created the immigration humanitarian crisis, how the Salvadoran government and social movements are responding, and what international solidarity can do to help. Cori Ring-Martinez, USESSC El Salvador coordinator will translate.

PICA’s Sister Cities Committee will host the presentation. Donations will be accepted to help defray the costs of the tour.

Museum after school

BANGOR — The Maine Discovery Museum will host an event as a part of the Keep the Lights on After School initiative, promoting after school programs for children, 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the museum. Activities that that take place in the museum’s after school program will be showcased. Admission to the event is free. For information, call 262-7200.

Dessert tasting, auction

BREWER — The Shoestring Thrift Shop will host a dessert tasting and auction as a fundraiser for the shop’s building fund at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, in the basement of First United Methodist Church of Brewer, 40 South Main St.

Pumpkin fun

CASTINE — A family event full of pumpkin activities such as pumpkin decorating, pumpkin olympics, pumpkin hoops, bake sale, pumpkin tidal race, pumpkin pitch and putt, and scarecrow decorating will take place 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Castine Town Doc.

For adults, a Beer Garten and food will be available. Antique cars will be available for viewing and there will be lots of vendors.

A pancake breakfast will be served 8-10 a.m. at the Trinitarian Church.

Activities for seniors

HERMON — Hermon Recreation announced that it is organizing senior activities such as exercising and stretching programs, card and board games, meal programs, water aerobics, arts and crafts, book swaps, and other activities. Down East Ice Age Trail

HOLDEN — Penobscot Valley Chapter of Maine Audubon will sponsor a the field trip, Maine’s Down East Ice Age Trail. 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. Meet at Fields Pond Audubon Center in Holden.

University of Maine professor Hal Borns, an international expert on glacial geology, developed Maine’s Ice Age Trail to help non-geologists understand Maine’s rugged landscape. Travel by 15-passenger van to visit selected sites along the Ice Age Trail in Hancock County and Washington County. Participants can to download maps at http://iceagetrail.umaine.edu/.

Bring a lunch or plan to purchase one during the trip.

The cost to go on the trip is $10 audubon members, $15 others. Call 989-2591 to register.

Trail Day volunteers needed

ORONO — The Orono Land Trust is seeking volunteers to take part in its Fall Trail Day at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18.

Organizers said there are many projects to complete and volunteers are encouraged to

pick a place they have never been before or join family, neighbors and friends at a favorite

preserve. Volunteers should plan to wear good footwear and work gloves.

These areas are in need of work:

• Piney Knoll Conservation Area. Leader Mike Opitz. Meet at the end of Penobscot  Street. Work will consist of stabilizing the Penobscot Street entrance to the area by installing two water bars. Bring shovel, pick-axe and rakes. Some tools will be on site.

• Frog Pond. Leader John Maddaus. Meet on Shadbush Lane, left, off Forest Avenue coming from downtown Orono, before I-95. Workers will clear the boundary line and make a small trail to the vernal pool. Bring clippers and saws.

• McPhetres Forest. Leader, Dave Wardrop. Meet behind the cemetery on State Street in

Veazie. All bridges need to be replaced. Many hands are needed. Bring hammers and sledgehammers.

• Caribou Bog Conservation Area. Leader, Bucky Owen. Meet at the parking area on

Putnam Road. The Pine Ponds area saw extensive work this summer. Pipes, metal and

other items need to be picked up. Wood needs to be chipped or moved into piles.

Work will take place rain or shine. Refreshments will be provided.

Pasta dinner, auction

ORONO — The All Things Pasta Plus Trimmings: Community Dinner and Live Auction will take place 4:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Keith Anderson Community House, 19 Bennoch Road.

The dinner will be prepared by Gateway Seniors “chefs” and will include appetizers, baked lasagna, baked ziti, stuffed shells and other pasta dishes, coleslaw, green salad, garlic bread, desserts and beverages. Those who wish may assist by preparing a dish, donating an auction item or purchasing a ticket. The cost is $7, $5 children 6 to 12, free to children under 6, $20 families.
