BRUNSWICK, Maine — The body of a man was recovered from the Androscoggin River between Topsham and Brunswick on Wednesday morning.
The body was discovered just upriver from the hydroelectric dam at Fort Andross by an employee of Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners, which operates the dam.
Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said the body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office for positive identification. The cause of death was determined to be drowning, he said.
Topsham police, the Maine Warden Service and Maine State Police divers and cadaver dogs had searched the river since Friday, according to Sgt. Scott Dalton of the Maine State Police K9 Unit.
On Friday, Maine State Police Detective Abbe Chabot and her cadaver dog, Pivot, searched the river with Topsham police Officer Troy Garrison by boat. On Saturday, Warden Michelle Merrifield and her cadaver dog, Duchess, “had a hit” on something, Dalton said. A Maine State Police dive team searched the area on Sunday but found nothing.
Garrison said police were notified that a man who had been living in a tent on the Topsham side of the river was missing, but as of Wednesday afternoon, police still had not identified the body, Brunswick police Deputy Chief Marc Hagan said.
“We have no idea if it’s the subject we were looking for,” Garrison said.
