BIDDEFORD, Maine — A second man has died as a result of a fire in Biddeford last month, according to state police.

James Ford, 21, died Tuesday night at a Scarborough hospice facility, state police spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a release.

Ford and his roommate, James Moore, 23, had been rescued by firefighters from their apartment in the Sept. 18 fire at a 35 Main Street apartment building, McCausland said.

Moore died two days after the fire from smoke inhalation.

Investigators have determined arson was the cause of the fire and police continue to consider Ford and Moore’s deaths as suspicious, McCausland said. The fire was set in a rear stairwell to the building.

An autopsy on Ford’s body was scheduled for Wednesday at the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta.
