Patient safety score

BANGOR — Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems announced recently that three of its hospitals have received another “A” in patient safety measures from the Hospital Safety Score (SM) by The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that awards top ranks to hospitals that perform well in quality measures. For the sixth consecutive update since the program began in 2012, Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Inland Hospital in Waterville and Mercy Hospital in Portland earned a top score from the national organization. The three hospitals are among only nine in Maine and only 204 in the nation to earn an “A” since 2012.

“Preventing errors that keep our patients safe is our utmost concern. This rank from Leapfrog lets us know we are on the right path,” said Dr. Robert Thompson, senior vice president and chief medical officer for EMHS. “We are constantly looking at surgical procedures, infection prevention measures and technological upgrades that help us improve processes, which in turn, improve patient safety.”
